wheel size confusion!

okay.. I know there are a lot of talk on here already about wheels size and backspacing but no one that ive seen has said for sure what setup they are running up front as far as spindles and all. so here is my setup and questions. any help is so appreciated.

I have a 67 stepper and I am running stock 1985 spindles so that adds 1/2 per side trac width. so ive been told.

on the rear I have the earlier narrow rear end.

I would like to go as wide as possible on the rear with no trimming (just my preference)

and id like to go 8'' wide on the front but I like the outside width front to rear to be the same. so looking down the side of the truck the wheels are flush with each other. does anyone have solid backspace numbers that would achieve this?

Okay I'm pretty sure I'm doing 18s. 18x8.5 with 5.5 backspace up front and 18x9 with 5 backspace in the rear. Does that sound right to you guys for an even outside track width? Where are y'all buying wheels? Any suggestions appreciated because I can't find any with those specs that don't have to be custom and cost out the whazoo.

Respectfully what kind of budget are we working with? I'll see what I can find for you.

You could do Coys.. pretty sure have what you're looking for. If I had another stepper with a 2in drop in the front and 73+ kmemeber I'd do 5.25bs. If the truck is really low, you'd need 5.5 to make sure the wheels would turn.

A 20x8.5 with 4.75 BS is what I used on my step (rear) and I didn't have to cut anything. 255/45 tires.

A 9in wheel with 5in bs is essentially the same fit as above just .25 wider inside and .25 wider outside (explains the bs difference too. So if you could do a 9 with 5 in backspace in the rear OR an 8.5 with 4.75 you would be in good shape IMO.

I would go with 8.5 in wheel up front with 5.25in backspace.

It is really tough to get a bunch of tire under a stepper. That's why I am changing over to fleet honestly.


The lower you go with this setup, the better it will look (just my .02).

Wow thank you for all the advise. I'm thinking the same about the lowering thing. I keep co.spidering going lower but I'm just not sure yet. I already have new springs for the 2/4 drop so what should I do for lower? Spindles and blocks? And with spindles and blocks would I need anything else? Shocks? Shorter bump stops?

The info posted above I cannot confirm or deny, so I can't speak for them one way or another, but if you want to be absolutely certain you're as close to equal track width front to back as you can get, you really need to measure the width of your front and rear axles from wheel mounting surface to wheel mounting surface.

Now, take your wheel width, subtract your desired backspacing, then multiply by 2 (for each side) and add to the axle width and you'll get the approximate width from lip to lip.

blocks and spindles don't require different shocks since the distance from upper to lower shock mount doesn't change. Spindles just move the wheel up into the fender, lowering the truck. Blocks lower the trailing arms, bringing the spring down and the frame with it.

Okay so if I decided for 2 more inches it wouldn't be too big of a deal. Sweet. And thanks for bring that up about measuring. I didn't even think of that. I will do that as soon as I have the spindles and axle bolted up with will be by next week. Th.ka guys I appreciate all the advice and help.
