Question Fan distance??

Can anybody tell me the distance from the back of the radiator to the front of the mechanical fan? I have a 64 C10, had a 230 and I'm changing over to a V8. The distance is about 7" which looks like a bunch to me. I'm running the short pump and the 6cyl fan spacer. Thanks

Re: Fan distance??

You need a V8 fan shroud. I don't recall the exact setback but with the shroud, the fan should be sticking out of the shroud about 1/2-3/4 of it's thickness.

Re: Fan distance??

My 65 came with a 350. Not original, of course. They changes out the original fan and put in a larger diameter one to pull more air. My truck was missing the shroud for radiator. It was overheating when I bought it. The fan sat about 5-1/2" ( a little longer than the iPhone vertically) from the radiator with the big spacer. It would work fine when driving. At idle it with spike. Bought a shroud, put original fan back in ( same distance ) and changed the thermostat from a 195f to a 160f. No more problems. Hope that helps.

Re: Fan distance??

Oh yeah, my fan is 3/4 in the shroud and about a 1/4 of it sticks out

Re: Fan distance??

When I swapped in a 350, I built a couple brackets and hand bent a new top saddle in my garage and moved the radiator closer to the engine. Short term easy fix until I can build/buy the proper shroud.

Re: Fan distance??

Whatever you do...... Don't get rid of the shroud mounting brackets!!! They are hard to find and that's what the shroud mount to. I found out the hard way after trying to fabricate something for the shroud to mount to and my radiator guy, that I finally took it to, had a 63 and laughed at what I was trying to do and said "you need the brackets that go right here you knucklehead" finally found them...... Fit like a glove

Re: Fan distance??

As Chevy Mike says find the factory parts for the v8, makes life easier...this is how the fan placement should be for maximum air pull thru radiator.

Re: Fan distance??

Thanks everybody for the replies. Yeah I figured a shroud was in order but can't seem to find one that isn's a bunch of $$

Chevymike, are the shroud mounting brackets in your picture the factory shroud brackets as mentioned by another in this thread? I know I dont have those.

Has anybody used the replacement shroud from Classic Parts? I was curious of the quality....

I added the 18" thermo fan for HD cooling. Distance from the back of the rad to the front of the fan clutch is 6"

Re: Fan distance??

Fan clutch was recommended to me by an expert if you have the room for it.

Re: Fan distance??

I had a flex fan, complete garbage. The big fan with all those blades and the clutch keeps it cool no problem... Got the fan from Summit racing on Ebay for 45.00 and the clutch from Rock Auto . com

Yes those are factory bracket. You'll likely need to find used or build something similar.

Thanks for the offer man! I'm going to fab some up myself. It will give the chance to play with my sheet metal brake I made.
