Iron Duke 4 cylinder chev pickup

Anyone ever really seen 60 to 63 chev pickup with factory installed 153 cubic inch 4 cylinder in it? I have factory brochure that says they did but I have never seen one, I have 3 of them, one came from 66 nova, one from boat with merc out drive and one from old postal jeep. Wondering if there are any left in the world that actuly came in chev pickup.

the 153 4 from the nova was available in the G vans, are you sure that isnt what your catalog is referring to? iron duke didnt come out till 77.

I'll try and dig it out tomorrow but I think its referring to 62 and 63 pickups. Around here any 153 is nick named an iron duke, I'll get back with you on that.

From my '63 shop manual. Don't know if this helps or muddies things up since it was standard equipment on the P10, but doesn't state if it's an option for the C or K10.

Sorry, got home to night to late to dig out my pickup brochures but wiill try later. Never heard of 153 being in any pontiac, only chevy, but lots of early postal jeeps had then and tons of merc outdrive boats, I have a boat right now that has the early 153. Years ago way before 1977 I took a 153 out of one nova and put it in a 66 nova SS with an M 21 behind it and it was a fun car to drive. I'll keep working on the pickup issue.

ACK I agree, the 153 4 cyl. was standard on the P series, but you could C.O.P.O. if your heart desired into a C series. If they were willing to install a 348 as a C.O.P.O why not a 153! In none of my literature does it mention a 4 cylinder in a C series. There is mention of an Max. Economy Equip.

Along the same lines, I once boosted the battery of a 1989 Chevy pickup, 4 cyl. with Air Conditioning. The owner explained that the dealer recieved the truck that way and that she got it for a great price. Totally gutless as she explained but good on fuel. lol

RPO sheet from 1963 shows the L engine options but there`s no 153 in C series.

Here is something awesome! My 64 three-quarter ton had the factory option of the 153 4 cylinder! Imagine trying to pull a load with that thing!

Is the 153 being referenced actually an "iron duke" or just another 4cyl that happens to be 153 cubes?

do you have the option list or is that hearsay
I believe that there was a US military installation in these truck that used the 53 series detroits - 3 cyl unit.I can remember reading this either in a Motors or Chilton shop manual back in the time period when they were new

I looked at the factory option list that is mounted on the kick panel.

Did I open up a can of worms or what? I don't know about pickups but you could get the 353 detroit diesel in early 60s series 50 trucks because I have the brochure laying right in front of me. Anyway, back to the 153, I was always told that the early 60s 153 ci 4 cylinder was the Iron Duke and I think they are so cute I have alway tried to collect them. I have 4 of the original early 60s motors, one with the air cooled powerglide trans and 3 of the made in mexico nock offs made for the later mercury boats.

Nothing wrong with a new can of worms, that's partially what this site is about. The plate in question on the kick panel, may be generic to the P and C series. Would have to find a P series and see if the identical plate was used. If you look on the 63 Order sheet it states that the 230 6cyl was optioned to the P10, thus the standard 153 was the base model.

T.J. MCCAULEY, could we get a picture of the 153 in the 3/4 ton please. Certainly would be an oddity. The distance from the front of the motor to the radiator must have had different mounting position for the rad or a deep fan shroud.

I know we are talking trucks, but I have personally seen a 64 Impala with the 4 cyl in my lifetime

TJ means it's listed on the plate, not that his truck had one. I think the same plate must have been used for P10 models, too. All the trucks have the 153 listed there, including my '63 C-30 dually. Also IIRC my '65 C10 lists the 327, but that wasn't a listed option until '66 for a half ton.

You guys may have to Duke it out. Oh I'm sorry for the pun, I just had to do that. But really, on the issue of the Iron Duke, wife and I got married in 77 and I know I heard people calling these iron dukes before then so to me they are.

Chevy and Pontiac both had similar sized inline 4cyl engines and I think that's what is causing the confusion.

From the Wikipedia page for the Chevy 153:

The 153 engine is entirely different from the later Pontiac 151-cubic-inch (2.5 L) Iron Duke, but the two are often confused today.
