700R4 VSS to cable speedometer

This is in an 86 C10. It came with a 700r4, but I'm not 100% the one in it is original. When I got it, the speedometer housing in the tail section was missing the driven gear and just had the regular mechanical style housing. Turns out, the output shaft on the trans doesn't have a drive gear and only has the VSS ring.

i'm guessing this used to have some way to convert the electrical signal to a mechanical speedo or maybe this trans came from a later model truck and didn't need the mechanical output.

it looks like i'm going to either need to pull the vss ring and convert it to gear driven style, or try something like this: http://www.summitracing.com/parts/RPC-250-4153/

has anyone used something like that? or are there some factory replacement parts i can use to make this work? might be easier to just convert it to all mechanical.

Re: 700R4 VSS to cable speedometer

well i've given up on trying to figure out if this transmission with the VSS ring ever worked with the mechanical speedometer. unless this speedometer can work with either type, i don't know how it was done.

so i've ordered a new drive gear to replace the vss ring, retainer clip, and driven gear. we'll see how it goes. i hear the vss is press fit and can be a pain to pull off. hopefully i have enough room to make some tool to get it off of there.

There is a unit called cable-x , converts vss to mechanical. I use one works well.

Re: 700R4 VSS to cable speedometer

I converted my 89' cable driven to a VSS pulse driven speedometer. The VSS pulse ring was interchangable to the original gear driven ring and were held in place with a snap ring (all be it, a thick snap ring!). That part of the swap was easy. There were two tailhousings, one for cable and one for VSS sensor. Everything from there is wiring, etc.

Write-up......

Re: 700R4 VSS to cable speedometer

Some nice info there, thanks! I went the opposite direction and swapped the VSS reluctor ring with a gear drive. Fairly straight forward.
