58 Brake booster kit w/ 4 speed clearance issues.

Has anyone had success finding a frame mounted MC/booster kit that clears a 4 speed manual trans? All of the kits I've seen so far say they wont clear a 4 speed. I really dont want to do the firewall booster kit mainly because I'd like to keep the stock pedals. Having one come out of the floor for the clutch and the other out of the firewall for the brake probably won't look right.

Mine clears my TH350 and transfer case with room to spare, but I made my own brackets to keep it tighter to the frame and radiused it to match the diameter of the booster (7" dia). Can't imagine the sm420 is much larger than mine.

Which 4-speed are you talking about? There is no issue with the SM420.

(I'd post a pic but the gallery still ain't workin')

Re: 58 Brake booster kit w/ 4 speed clearance issues.

I'm running an SM465/NP205 transfer case. I was looking at it last night and it sure looks like I have some room to work with. I just hate ordering things and then have to send them back! Let me go out and take a pic.

if your concerned about room go to a hydroboost, they are a lot smaller and have more braking than the 7'' vac booster that goes under floor

Could you possibly mount the booster/MC on the outside of the frame instead of the inside? Went that route on my AD - not sure how it might work on a TF.

Re: 58 Brake booster kit w/ 4 speed clearance issues.

You can move the booster/mc farther back and just run a longer rod between the pedal and booster. Someone did that but I can't remember the thread, you just need a stouter rod so it doesn't bend. I used 1/2" rigid conduit (thick wall stuff) for mine. If you do that the booster will fall behind the point you measured at, more towards the connection to the transfer case.

What's the hydroboost out of? The ones I saw online were around 800 bucks...to rich for my blood.

Orrie, I think I may take your suggestion and move it back if it doesnt clear the transmission. Looking at some pics, it looks like it may clear anyway.

Re: 58 Brake booster kit w/ 4 speed clearance issues.

you can find hydroboost units at swap meets, car shows, craigslist. wrecking yards for diesel cars, trucks, and mustangs.
The one I used was out of a 94 chevy 1 ton, and with master cylinder I paid the guy 75 bucks. I just had to rotate it 90 degrees to make it easier to plumb.
The master cyl. sits too close to the floorboard, so I removed the reservoir, had a friend make some adapters, ran some aluminum lines up to the firewall, and put the reservoir up there. Go to my build thread "my 57 revitalized. it is on page 5 I think by now. It shows how I put it all together.

Re: 58 Brake booster kit w/ 4 speed clearance issues.

the hydroboost i used was from an 03 mustang cobra
my oldtimers prevents me from telling you what i paid for it
i'm thinking $125 w/mc and proportional valve
i used nissan quest (ford product) adapters and remote reservoir

Re: 58 Brake booster kit w/ 4 speed clearance issues.

I have seen guys move the booster/MC back further using a larger dia. rod and even seen them mounted offset. No real rule of thumb just make it stout. My cousin has a 50' chevy sport coupe and his pedal started losing throw, I put it on the lift and found the junk lightweight aftermarket bracket had broken at the welds causing it to flex when you hit the pedal. Don't worry about MC access because your not gonna be messing with it after you have system dialed in. Good luck and post pics of your solution.

Re: 58 Brake booster kit w/ 4 speed clearance issues.

Just installed the Booster/MC kit from Performance online...plenty of clearance without any mods.

So, I have a choice on the front brake plumbing. The Prop valve has option for a left and right front ports. Should I run seperate lines to each side or use just one port and tee off, running along the front crossmember to the passenger side?

Re: 58 Brake booster kit w/ 4 speed clearance issues.

There's always an electric booster.

Factory GM versions came in Buick T-types and GN's and some FWD Pontiac GP's.
http://www.gmhightechperformance.com.../photo_15.html

Speedway motors has an aftermarket kit.
http://www.speedwaymotors.com/Electr...Drum,9643.html

Once upon a time aftermarket pricing for the GM versions was messed up. I bought four of them, completely rebuilt, for $44 each before someone caught on. Put them on everything from late 80s Chevy 4X4's to a Datsun V8 swap.

Re: 58 Brake booster kit w/ 4 speed clearance issues.

I ran one to the back and one out to each front, just like the 74 truck it came out of. figured GM spent a few bucks figuring out so why second guess?

This prop valve has 3 ports; one to the rear, one driver's front, one passenger front. A little extra brake line to run seperate lines to each front brake, but I think I'm going to roll that way.
