5.3 vortec swap into a 67 c-10
Hey guys I am new to this swap and have questions.
Do I need the stock harness and computer if I plan on going carburated i do have the 4l60e tranny. Or can I have a harness made? I ask the question because I do not have the stock harness for motor or tranny. And if I wanted to run fuel injected woult I need the original harness and computer or not? Need all the advice I can get on the conversion thanks guys. Posted via Mobile Device |

(If you are using the stock ECU for transmission and ignition control, I would just run the factory EFI, though.) Quote:

1. Stock ECU with stock harness modified for swap use. 2. Stock ECU with aftermarket harness. 3. Aftermarket ECU with aftermarket harness. Which one to pick depends on how many mods you want to throw at the motor.

Re: 5.3 vortec swap into a 67 c-10
Right now I want to run a carb. So I will need a msd setup and a tranny harness. But if I were to go fuel injected I would have to get a aftermarket ech and a after market computer?
And I was also thinking of doing a 700r4 so I did not have to get a tranny harness. What is a better tranny? 4l60e or a 700r4? And I have found engine conversion plates for mounting the engine do they really work? Posted via Mobile Device |

If your doing carb and considering going efi; I would suggest getting the o.e. computer and having it set up for what you want. It would be easier in the long run to just re-tune the computer and swap the harness down the road if you wanted to switch it up. The 700r4 is mechanically related the 4l60e, though the methods by which it is controlled are much different. The later model 4l60e's also have internal improvements that the 700 never got. I'd pass on any 700 given the choice. The motor mount plates are adapters, as they don't modify the physial mount or its function...they simply change the bolt pattern, kidna like a wheel spacer/adapter. I'm not sure how they could "not work", as its just a piece of metal. Certain year trucks or certain combo's of equipment have better luck with the POL or dirty dingo mounts, as they can move the engine a bit more for those with 4x4's and other combo's.

Re: 5.3 vortec swap into a 67 c-10
Depends on the plates. Some won't clear a truck A/C compressor. Others require cutting and welding the stock motor mounts (see my build thread for an example) to get them to clear the exhaust manifolds. It depends on what all you need to have working. But they are a viable option.

Re: 5.3 vortec swap into a 67 c-10
I will be going carb. But what is efi? And I don't have the I.e harness or computer. I plan on going with a built 700 but what internals are you talking about on the 4l60e the year of tranny and motor is a 99. Idk how much a tranny harness and computer is. Has anyone done carb and left the 4l60?

Re: 5.3 vortec swap into a 67 c-10
Electronic Fuel Injection..........if that acronym is unfamiliar....ouch. Don't take this the wrong way, as I've become a bit of an embittered prick about stuff like this but; it sounds like you really need to spend some time on research before you pull any triggers. Read the faq's, browse posts...SEARCH...and browse through the build threads. There are HUGE amounts of information in them, and you might be able to find someone who has done the same combination you are thinking of.
Here is the 4l60e wiki, it will save me the technical jargon. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GM_4L60-E_transmission Basically; in 98 the 4l60e got a small revamp when it was setup to work with the then-new generation of ls motors. Its got a larger input shaft, pump and convertor, and I believe there are some differences on the planetary as well. A built 700r4 is a paper weight if you can't keep the TV cable adjusted, something that requires a special bracket setup for the ls motor. The cost of building a 700r4 vs a 4l60e isn't drastically differenct, and the ability to change the shift points and firmness via an ecm tuner like HP Tuners puts it over the top. 6l80e>4l80e>4l70e>th400>4l65e>th350>4l60e>pre-ls 4l60e>700r4 IMO I left out the 200r4 and like 12 other trannies but you get the point.

I know I will have to run a msd box. But I was trying not to go with any transmission harness . And yes haven't don't a ton on browsing but I work a lot and have talked to people about it just not all the little things. I just do not know what a harness will cost for the 4l60e

Re: 5.3 vortec swap into a 67 c-10
Don't take this the wrong way....but I've never understood wanting to swap in a cutting edge technology engine.....and then give it brain damage with a carb.
Good luck with your project.

My other question is that I have a behind the seat tank and would like to use it I know I will have to put a pump on it but has anyone left the metering devise in the top of the pump and made it work that way?

Re: 5.3 vortec swap into a 67 c-10
I've always liked the 4l80 over the 6l80. Not that the trans is better, but its so much cheaper, just as capable in terms of power, and easier to tune.
As far as wiring harnesses, I got mine from Current Performance and the wait took a bit, but the harness itself is awesome. Very well made, everything is labeled and ran perfectly. $725 for one with an auto trans, fuse box, a/c, and the e-fan relays

Re: 5.3 vortec swap into a 67 c-10
I thought the 4l60e was good for 350hp. And I think I'm gonna save up for a harness. I have an extra turbo 350 as a back up.

Does anyone know about any good power steering kits for a 67 c10 with a 5.3 engine?

It looks like it's going to be pretty straightforward to get the stock steering box plumbed up to the original truck PS pump.

I do not have power steering now.
And will my stock gauges work or will I have to get a new set? Posted via Mobile Device |

Re: 5.3 vortec swap into a 67 c-10
You can graft the 71-2 or 73+ stuff onto that front crossmember and get disc brakes and power steering from the donor. Pretty cheap, and pretty bolt on. In certain cases you have to space the pump off the frame or use a little adapter plate. I can't remember on the year specifics, but I wouldn't doubt Captain Fab makes something for it (look him up on here).
Whether or not your gauges work depends on which gauges you have now, and which setup you go with. The electronic trannies output a VSS signal instead of a cable output, so it requires a special adapter for the speedo output to work with an oldschool cable speedo. Things like voltage and oil pressure gauges (mechanical) will work fine. You may need a different sending unit for the oil pressure (electric) and temp, as the ranges on the old gauges and the new senders are different.
