Re: 1960 1 ton pics

That 1 ton looks pretty nice. Does it have torsion bars up front, like the C10's and 20's, or does it have coil springs?

Re: 1960 1 ton pics

It has tosion bars up front. Its kinda odd im finding. I have come to the conclusion it is some kind of heavy duty 3/4 ton. It says 30 and its rated 10k.

Also, I believe the bolt pattern is 8x6.5? Anyone know for sure?

a 1 ton means it will haul 10,000 lbs, including the weight of the truck, driver and fuel. subtract that weight and one can see how much payload it can haul. about 1 ton. Kieth

1 tons normally had dual wheels and tires, with single rear wheels the truck could be rated from 7500-8500lbs.

Re: 1960 1 ton pics

It's not a HD 3/4 ton, it's a normal 1 ton with single wheels. I have a '63 C-30 dually flatbed and my DD is a '65 C-30 single wheel with a 9' stepside bed. All the C-30's had 10,000GVW stamped in the plate. Your truck was probably also originally a 9' stepside truck that someone stuck a flatbed on for more utility. (The fact your truck has a trailer brake controller also agrees with the theory it was a working truck.)

Btw, nice truck! I'm a big fan of the 3/4's and 1 tons; always nice to see more getting saved.

And yes, the bolt pattern is 8x6.5". I have 80's 3/4 ton wheels on mine; here's a picture FWIW. 235/85r16 mud tires on the back and 245/75r16's on the front.

Re: 1960 1 ton pics

Thats awesome 66 submarine. Good info for sure. Yea I was looking at aftermarket wheels. I find it odd It was a 1 ton stepside. I guess I just assumed that stepsides were mainly lighter trucks. Nice looking truck you got to. I am still not seeing a whole lot of them.

Re: 1960 1 ton pics

Glad I could help clarify. If you have any other questions, just shoot me a PM.

Yeah, they didn't make many of the big stepsides, and there aren't many left today. They were more common in the 47-55 era from what I've seen. (they also made them in the 67-72 era, along with the 8.5' "longhorn" fleetsides that started in '68) My truck was purchased new by the Coca-Cola plant FWIW.

Btw, what's your plan for your truck?

Re: 1960 1 ton pics

Well First I have to rewire the fuse block....and from the fuse block to the dash. Im pretty sure thats why it wont turn over. " Some wires are burnt" It either needs a clutch...or clutch cable. Havnt got that far. Short term get the sucker mobil....running. Some TLC some elbow grease. Wheels, tires... bleed brakes all that kinda stuff.

weight of truck, driver and fuel at 8000 pounds must be one BIG GUY and passenger in the cab....the truck should weigh in at under #4500 ..fuel #160 ...3 in the cab #700 = #5360 ....#10000 GVW - #5360=#4640 = 2 1/4 ton plus..... the bumper that is on the rear looks like it was a step-side

I thought the same thing, the 1 ton designation came from the military and those trucks were a lot heavier that this chevy........our old trucks are lighter than even the stuff they build today, maybe thats why our grandfathers got away with loading them so heavy.

Re: 1960 1 ton pics

My understanding was the whole 1 ton, 2 ton, 1/2 ton, etc thing is from way back when. (Like the 20's-30's)

FWIW, mine with all it's extra crap (a good several hundred pounds worth) added rolled over the scales with me in it @ 4,950lbs.

Back to the thread; cool to hear you are keeping it a real 1 ton, I think you'll like it. (I really love mine.) BTW, I'm not sure, but I think being a '60 yours will have a hydraulic clutch.

Re: 1960 1 ton pics

Always good to see another C30. That picture of your stepside is awesome.

Oh and I plan on dressing up the inline. Figure it will suit me fine. look good with a split header and a triple deuce...and upgraded electronics.

Now i just have to pick some wheels..

Re: 1960 1 ton pics

Thanks for the compliment. (Btw, I've got more pictures and ramblings on my website and photobucket if you want to see more.)

I like the inline sixes too; my '63 flatbed has a 292, and I have another one I'm rebuilding to go in my '65.

Re: 1960 1 ton pics

Thanks. Lol, I just realized that myself. FWIW, I really love the big west coast mirrors with the 5" spot mirrors mounted below them; especially handy for towing. Never did get why people take the side mirrors off a truck to begin with...

Re: 1960 1 ton pics

Yeah, I like the look of them, too. And functionally I really like them; with the spot mirrors I can see several lanes of traffic and watch my rear tires at the same time.

Re: 1960 1 ton pics

You can get new ones, I got those used from a member here. (The spot mirrors I got new off ebay) BTW, the smaller ones like mine are called Junior West Coast mirrors; they are about 5"x10" instead of 7"x16" like the full sized ones.
