Speedometer Question

Hey guys and gals,

I just installed a used speedometer gauge I took out of a 63 and put into my 60 K20. Eveything seems to work ok but the odometer doesn't work (no big deal) and the needle fluctuates, sometimes wildly. Is it normal for the needle to bounce around in these old trucks or do I need to dig into the gauge and see if I messed something up?

THE SPEEDO IS MECHANICAL, LUBRICATE THE CABLE (AT THE SAME TIME CHECK THE ENDS OF THE CABLE TO MAKE SURE THEY ARE NOT MESSED UP) IF IT STILL DOES NOT WORK CHECK THE DRIVE GEARS IN THE TRANSMISSION.....KIETH

Thanks guys, I have a new speedo cable but it's too short so I had to use the old one which is questionable. I'll pull the gauge and double check it, lube it, and lube the cable too. Drove around today and seemed to be a little better. Thanks again!

if the cable is lubed and still doing it the it needs lubed inside like WOO said or the speed cup is dragging an then you need a rebuild

In my exper., often the "chain" and/or inside of the housing are worn along their sides such that even careful lubing will not correct that wild swinging. Maybe NAPA will have the proper LENGTH AND ENDS in a new speedo cable assy.
Also, when routing, remember to use long, slow bends.

OK - figured out that I have some worn and broken teeth in the odometer gearing. I took the 1963 plastic (broken) one out and replaced it with a metal one out of a 1960 so the odometer should work now. Now I'm waiting for napa to get the speedo cable in so I can install it. In the meantime, I'm cleaning the cluster and reprinting the needles, luging etc. Thanks guys for all the help!
