Vapor Canister for LS Swap
Is anyone using any kind of charcoal filter or vapor canister for their LS Swap? The smell of gas in my garage is a bit overwhelming. I'm using one of Boyd's Welding tanks under the bed, so space is at a premium. Most that I see are too large to mount under the bed. Any ideas?

Re: Vapor Canister for LS Swap
Everybody (most) except the Cali guys pull all that stuff off.
If the garage doesn't smell good, your using cheap gas!

Re: Vapor Canister for LS Swap
Are there things with the tune that would/wouldn't render the vapor canister useful? In my s10 framed build, I left it in...but it's not on the road yet.

Re: Vapor Canister for LS Swap
I always wondered about this as well but i don't have the original 05 when but i was wondering about using the one from my 91 since there's two lines one from the gas tank and then going up to the original throttle body could you not plumb that line to the new throttle body like the intake duct or something? Just a thought as i still haven't touched my 6.0 swap lately

Re: Vapor Canister for LS Swap
There is the evap solenoid and the code it will throw if it were disconnected. Its usually turned off en-mass with the rest of the emissions stuff.
I don't like the idea of sucking combustible vapor through a hose the full length of my truck, into the engine bay and into the intake manifold. Same goes for EGR, don't like it.

What type of fuel lines did you use?

Re: Vapor Canister for LS Swap
I had all my emissions stuff turned off when I initially had the ecm flashed to remove VATS and stuff. I'm mainly looking for an idea to hook a hose from my rollover vent on my gas tank to some type of filter just to rid the garage of the strong gas smell. Fuel lines are -6 stainless braided.

Re: Vapor Canister for LS Swap
Hook up an evap purge solenoide, vent and canister, let the pcm do it for you. That's what I plan on doing. I got my Evap canister from the engine compartment of a 99 burban, it had the vent attaced.

Re: Vapor Canister for LS Swap
I have the original one on my 71 hooked up to the line from the tank to vent it, but left the other hose that used to go to the carb open. Works fine as a vent and no gas smell what so ever.

Re: Vapor Canister for LS Swap
If you just want SOMETHING to help with the smell, then just grab the evap off on a second generation (94+) S10. Its a square can about the size of a can of lighter fluid with a grounding strap ("sensor") and inbound line. Just plug your vent line into that (its just a box of activated cabon).
Ghetto-fabulous you could probably stick a few crushed charcoal brickets into an old PCV catch and hook it to the vent line. (But don't say I told you to)

Re: Vapor Canister for LS Swap
I installed a canister and canister bracket and hose ends from a 1999 Tahoe. I mounted the canister behind the battery. I used the existing vapor line, just re-bent the end of the line and ran a hose to the canister. Then used the old fuel supply line as the feed from the canister to the engine. I just re-bent the line to the rear of the trans and connected it to the engine purge feed.
I bought a new replacement gas cap as the old one was leaking. No fuel smells and it even passes the evap leak test! Here are a couple pics of where I mounted it.

Re: Vapor Canister for LS Swap
Do you back into your garage causing the fumes to build up?

Re: Vapor Canister for LS Swap
I don't always back into the garage, so I don't think that would completely be the issue. I usually leave a window open to let some of the fumes out as well. Does anyone see any reason why I couldn't take some sheet metal and weld together a small box with a spot to hook a hose up, and fill it with activated carbon? Wouldn't this serve the same purpose as the large vapor canisters that you can buy?

Re: Vapor Canister for LS Swap
I am going to use charcoal from the "fish" store for in home fish tanks, they tell me that is the same and much less expensive.
What gas cap will fit my stock 78 pick up (new 87 tank & sender) that is NOT vented?

Re: Vapor Canister for LS Swap
You could do that, but I'm not sure how long that would last before you would smell the fumes again. The activated carbon would eventually get saturated with the hydrocarbons and start to "leak" by. If you added another port on your home made canister and vented it to the engine though the purge system, it would remove the hydrocarbons from the activated carbon. It would also help very slightly with gas mileage...
