Loose handles- What to do

My door and window handles keep coming loose and sometime will fall off when the door is closed. I know that I could use thread locker on the screws but I was wondering if anyone come up with a better way of attaching the handles. I was thinking of drilling and taping into the end of posts then running a screw thrugh the handle into the post. What do you guys think?

Re: Loose handles- What to do

I put good quality set screws in mine with the thread locker for small screws. That way I can get them out later.

Make sure your handles are still good enough to grab onto the post. If they wear out the screw can come loose. New handles are cheap enough to replace.

+2 check the inner splines and if worn, get some new handles. Same thing happened on my Burb. Replaced the handles and no issues.

Re: Loose handles- What to do

Are your handles OEM or reproduced? I've heard a lot of guys who have the same issue w/reproduction handles.

Mine are reproduction. Also does anyone know where I can get those round plastic pices that go between the handles and the door?

Re: Loose handles- What to do

Classic Parts of America has them. This is a foam style washer that goes behind the door panel over the spline, and a plastic washer that goes between the outer panel and the handles.

I had the same issue w/a repop handle and put just a small piece of Teflon tape on the threads and it quit backing out. I went back to OEM handles since then.

Use 2 (shorter, if needed) set screws, one jamb'd onto other.

Re: Loose handles- What to do

Take a little jb weld or epoxy, and line the splines on the shaft with some vaseline or release agent. Fill the handle cup with the epoxy and slip it on, allow to harden, and remove. It creates a cast with new splines. Clean out the set screw hole, and then go back to using it as normal.

Re: Loose handles- What to do

I see them on ebay quite a bit and I believe Tim Tygerts at Obsolete chevy parts may have NOS on the shelf. You can always get some used ones and have them replated too.
