Question LSx power steering and drive shaft ?'s

The shop wanted my old fitting off the orignal power steering pump. Is that all they need to swap it out? I got it out and was wondering if they needed anything else. They have new hoses already for it.They wanted a new yoke for the drive shaft also, said the one on it now didn't fit the 4l80e trans. I thought 700 r4's and the 4l80e were the same size. I don't have the yoke but he said he could get one. Just wondering going tomorrow to take them the P/S fitting.

After talking to tech support at Air Lift I have found out that the kit I need is 60811. Per the measurements I gave them. Ride height of truck inside spring and inside diameter of springs.

Re: LSx power steering and drive shaft ?'s

4160's and 700's are the same but the 4l80 are much bigger yoke. I have had some power steering lines screw right into the new power steering pumps and some have to be adapted... so I'm sure Hawks is steering you right.

Good luck

4l80e uses the same yoke as a 400 turbo.

All is good. Took the fittings and old lines back just incase and they needed the length for the new ones. The yoke on the old shaft was to small + they had to cut it down 1 1/2" to fit so that is done also.

Yes that is correct, 350 turbo is the same as 700r4/4l60e, and the 4l80 is the same as a 400 turbo, basically just with overdrive added.

Re: LSx power steering and drive shaft ?'s

FYI you need special fittings for the 4l60e and 4l80e trannies when you hook up the tranny cooler, unless you are using O.E style push connect fittings. They go INTO the trans a little bit, and using any other fittings are problematic. If you are running braided lines or need to use aftermarket connectors for some reason, these fittings are a MUST.

Thats the only other thing I can think of that might come up as an issue if the shop didn't have it on the parts list (but this completely depends on your setup)

Why is it problematic? I took the factory ones off and used the ones off my th350 that my an lines hooked too no leaks.

I think this is what BR3W CITY was talking about, the longer fitting for a 4l80e. The 4l60e you can use the older flare fittings out of an older transmission.

Re: LSx power steering and drive shaft ?'s

YES, sorry if I made that more confusing for you guys. Failure to use the correct fitting on the (80's if you switch) can result in lack of line pressure, and goofy tranny issues. The depth on the fitting is critical, and is often missed because the stock line has this depth built into it.

BUT for the 4l60e, I should add that it gets a bit weird; you CAN use your old fittings, and you CAN use aftermarket fittings BUT....the tranny case is cut to 1/4" NPS, the S standing for STRAIGHT CUT. Many common fittings are cut to NPT, which is the Tapered National Pipe Thread. Technically, using the wrong fitting can leak or work its way out. That being said, people throw loctite on NPT and use them all the time.

I realize I got on the 4l80e mind track again.

Did you use a compression fitting, or flair the existing lines to fit the rad.

I will have to look at it closer Friday when I'm over there. I think they just used clamps on the radiator side since the fittings where there already.

Re: LSx power steering and drive shaft ?'s

That special fitting only applies to later 4l80s though if I'm not mistaken. At some point the rear fitting changed places on the housing and required the different fitting. My 95 4l80 has no problems with a standard fitting.

And for the record, I question shops all the time. If I didn't do it myself, I question it.

Well I got the old Power steering hoses off tonight and will have new ones made up to fit correctly. It will look a lot better when I'm done.
