New steel complete cab and hood

Hey guys I'm getting down to panel and paint quotes and they are scary!

So was wondering if they sell complete can with doors
Or Steel hoods for a 64?

I know shipping will kill me to aus but it is risky buying a hood from there without seeing it and it could har just as much damage.

Thanks

Re: New steel complete cab and hood

I'm pretty certain its a no for the cab. Even if it was offered I'm sure the cost would be enough to scare you away, and if not that, I bet the quality would. Nothing fits better than original, and shipping would still be an issue regardless.

I always assumed aftermarket hoods were steel, but not 100%

anyone else wanna chime in?

Re: New steel complete cab and hood

Most of the aftermarket supplies have been carrying replacement (import) steel doors for the 64-66 for a year or two. From the threads I've read, the quality and fit is somewhere between bad and horrible. Things like huge gaps, hinge areas that don't line up with the body, etc. Same type problems that are common to new import inner fenders. Seems like a lot of grief for the average price of $450-$500 per door.

Re: New steel complete cab and hood

So the time needed to align the new panels could be used to fix the old ones .

They are not real bad but thought if I could get a complete can with doors it would be all gapped nice and neat it seems that's far from it.

What about a steel hood I have only found fiberglass ones . The hood I have has a lot of sandblast damage it would be worth getting a new one if Availible.

Re: New steel complete cab and hood

There are not any repro steel hoods made. And as for the fiberglass hoods, I would not even consider those from what I have heard about them and all the other glass body parts that are produced.

In my opinion you would be better off to just have your current cab, doors and such repaired. That is assuming you have found someone that will do it correctly. Body metalwork must be done correctly or you will have a complete mess. Which is why it is not cheap, but when done you should have a cab that is as good as new.

Re: New steel complete cab and hood

Not that this helps as it's a 47-57 type cabs but just to give you a price point reference, a new replacement cab runs between $7000-$9000. Might put repair work in perspective. If there was a 60-66 cab, you'll likely be looking at that price or more.

Re: New steel complete cab and hood

You can get re-pop doors, but not hoods or cabs that I know of.

Re: New steel complete cab and hood

The original panels had terrible gaps/fitment anyways... As long as the mounting holes fit, I doubt the fit could be much worse than stock.
