Stupid Belt Noise

I've got a 1962 235, and the belt noise is driving me nuts.
The Crank pulley looks a little wider than the water pump and alternator pulleys. (the belt is farther "down" into the crank pulley)
I can squirt a little belt dressing on and it gets silent (heaven!), but only for a minute. The alignment looks right, and the belt is tight. Is there an easy fix?

Re: Stupid Belt Noise

I have used a old trick of rubbing bar soap on the belt .

Re: Stupid Belt Noise

I had the issue slightly when I had the 40+ year old belt still on....I got one of Napa's premium belts and even on cold mornings nothing squeaks. My pullleys are a little narrower I think.

Re: Stupid Belt Noise

I put a new, premium belt on - helped, but not 100%
I'll try the soap - thanks Jim.

Re: Stupid Belt Noise

Belt noise can also be caused by the pulleys being worn out. The belt will actually slip as it goes around the pulley no matter how tight the belt is.

Re: Stupid Belt Noise

It is likely the pulleys are not compatible. I no longer remember the angles, but the really wide original pulleys may have required a 40 or 45 degree side angle on the belt. I think the newer (thin) belts were pretty standard at 37 degrees (or something close to that). The only permanent cure may be replacing that lower pulley with one that matches the water pump and alternator.

Re: Stupid Belt Noise

Same here....I've learned to love it...sounds like a gear drive cam shaft....increasing in pitch with rpm till eventually it blends in with the sound of a cinderblock wall being pushed thru a hurricane at 70 mph!

Check pully alignment....I tweaked my alternator position with shims and thinning of the bracket tab and eliminated a buncha that whine.

Re: Stupid Belt Noise

Take the "Shine" out of the pulley with sandpaper or the like. Stop using belt dressing it just makes it slip more.
