Re: Can't decide what gears to run...need opinions

I am not big on mail order tunes. It is one thing to set shift points, fan settings, correct Speedo, and things like that. But for wot tuning or idle with a decent sized cam there really needs to be a wideband in the vehicle and either on the dyno or at the track. Simply put, no one can get nail air fuel and timing with out being there with the vehicle or at least having a customer log with hptuners or efi live and e-mailing tunes back and forth.

Example, I have had two Camaros with the exact same mods on the same dyno on the same day (they were cousins). One wanted more timing and more fuel while the other wanted less timing and less fuel but they made with in 5rwhp of each other.

Any halfway decent "tuner" should be able to. Do you have hptuners? If so, e-mail me your tune and will see if I can help you. Shaunliddy@hotmail.com

I have run 1.67 60's with a heads cam 5.7 with 3.73 gears and a 30" tire. I am quite sure I could have gone in the high 1.5's if I had a 5,500rpm converter vs the 4,500 I had in the truck.

My point, even a 3,200rpm verter coupled with a 3.73 gear will out run a stock converter with 4.56's.

I will be changing again from a 4.56 to a 3.90 in the coming months and will be happy to share the info again.
my boss on work was telling me I should run a 2800 or 3000 stall converter on my truck...I may have to eventually cuz I want to put in a nice cam and upgraded the valvetrain

Imo no reason to not go bigger with the right tuning.
