Petronix module replacing points in distributor

has anybody tried a Petronix module here ignitor 1 or 2. and what were your results.

I had an Ignitor 1 in a truck many years ago.
It worked great for the warranty period, but died shortly after.
Many people have had great results and longevity with them though. I may have gotten a bad one.

I have used Petronix in a couple of different Smallbocks and had great results. Good bang to the buck IMOP.

I have one running in my truck and it works great. Don't forget to upgrade your coil when you install the module. Verify that there is no slop in your current distributor shaft.

Ive got a Petronix II in my 63 on a 230cid engine and it was a great upgrade. Been in 4 years with no issues. I check the gap when I replace plugs and that's it for maintenance.

They are ok ,as far as a cheap ignition goes. Only ever used one, and that was enough. Now I used a true electronic ignition like an OEM HEI or go all MSD(and not the street-fire or the "ready to run" POS)

Because of the upgrade do you gap your spark plugs a little larger now

I used a pertronix ignitor in my 292 with the flamthrower 40,000 volt coil. Worked fine for the price. I prefer something a little better quality, but it was a good upgrade and yes..you can open the gap to as much as .45 with them. The new distributor I have on my truck allows for a gap of .55 though. lol.

Just a hair. Only went with a slightly larger coil. I don't remember what I gap I set them at, but I'll be yanking the engine out in two weeks and I can check for you.

The purchase and use of high (advertised) voltage output coils is a waste unless you have the engine or demands to need them. With normal everyday driving and the low compression of the stock engine(especially the I6) you simply do not need that much spark. You can actually increase your chance of detonation and do more damage than good, if not properly tuned.
A good stock HEI (from a '74-80-large cap) will work along time with great reliability too, for about the same investment. You can purchase them rebuild with new modules/pickup coils installed very reasonably.

If I had to do it over again, I would go with a standard HEI. The big block im installing will be running a Mallory HEI. I plan to install the 230 into the new fleetside and will probably install an HEI then. I've never had any issues with the Pertronix II, I base this decision off of talking to numerous people who installed HEI's and they seem to get better performance out of them in the long run. But I've been happy with the Pertronix II since I've installed it.
