Re: 89 GMC Cummins conversion
So, I spent this weekend trying to figure out why my alternator wasn't charging my batteries. To make a long story short the problem was with the wire that originally came with the truck, and that I had marked as being the alternator wire before removing the original engine, was only putting out 3 volts to the alternator. After jumping from the battery straight to the field wire it started charging like it should.
The internal Voltage regulator that I picked up at Ken's was not intended to go into this style of alternator but could probably be made to work. Since I had a bearing going out in it any way I decided to order me up a 1st generator (120 amp) alternator to put in it. Of course the price difference between the two also made the decision easier. I am attaching pictures of the internal VR going into the 1st gen. alternator. |

Re: 89 GMC Cummins conversion
Thanks guys. Well my wheels made it in, but the tire shop was having a hard time getting them mounted so I only picked up the two that were ready. The other two should be ready to be picked up tomorrow.

Re: 89 GMC Cummins conversion
It will be interesting to see them on the truck. They kind of look like cooler versions of GM PY0s. Great job on the truck. If I had the time I would love to sell my Duramax and build my dream truck which would be similar to this. Ken and the folks at Autoworld seem to be a great bunch of people. My buddy put a 2nd gen Cummins in a 99 GMC crew cab using a kit from them and it worked great. Reasonably priced too.

Re: 89 GMC Cummins conversion
I had the same thoughts as Les on your wheels. They should look pretty sweet on there for sure!

Re: 89 GMC Cummins conversion
Thanks guys. I chose these wheels because of how they kind of resemble the GM wheels but in a larger size. I did have my other two wheels and tires picked up. I should have the charging issues fixed this week and then it is off to the alignment shop before I put the new sneakers on.
So MaxxD is your cheVETTE a diesel?? |

Re: 89 GMC Cummins conversion
No it wasn't. I need too update my sig since I sold it about a month ago to a guy who is going to do what I wanted to and drop a V8 in it. Or try anyways. It was a 2 door though. Of course they make a crappy car like that to not rust at all but every square body and 67-72 has cab corners and rocker panel issues unless you find one that has been kept in a barn it's whole life. Lol

Re: 89 GMC Cummins conversion
Good News - I got my alternator charging the battery. I had a defective voltage regulator and I added an extra ground.
Time to schedule the alignment so that I can get the new sneakers on. |

Re: 89 GMC Cummins conversion
I forgot to mention that I also changed the alternator charging wire from the battery to the starter solenoid.

Re: 89 GMC Cummins conversion
This weekend I got some little things done. Buttoned up some wiring underneath the hood, changed the fluid in both axles and drilled both front center caps for the locking hubs.

Re: 89 GMC Cummins conversion
I wish I could say my hole was a nice . I had to do the same thing in my early 70's gmc hubcaps. Didnt look as nice when I was finished as it did in my head .

Re: 89 GMC Cummins conversion
I'd be careful how you word things. But I get what you're saying. It is hard to cut a nice big hole like that and not have it be out of center or look like a beaver got a hold of it.

Re: 89 GMC Cummins conversion
Have you ever checked out that pirate 4X4 site ? Ive been over there a few times . You must have to pass some sort of anti social test before they let you post . Those guys hack at each other as if the other guy just ran over your dog , and not by accident . I'd never post my build there . I would likely go to bed crying every nite as everyone and there brother hacked my ride online . Much more civil here . Maby we should move the who has the nicer hole , hub cap that is , over to the driveline section . Under rear ends ? My Canadian humor cracks me up anyway ...

Re: 89 GMC Cummins conversion
I'm still trying to figure a reply to Ryan's beaver comment. But I think you're correct that the quality of the hole should be figured out on a rear-end specific thread.

Re: 89 GMC Cummins conversion
i like to trim my hole nice and clean, like i like my ... nevermind.
i have a infrequently updated build on my 715 and my k20 on pirate. they dont bother me much, but i generally avoid that site for the exact reason. i understand trying to steer people in the right direction, but when did it become a who is the biggest dickhead contest? and coming from me, the guy that everyone that knows me has called me a dickhead at a minimum of once... |

Alignment is scheduled for Monday. I was going to put the wheels on and post some pics but the weather hasn't been cooperating. Cold, wet and snowy up here.
