A public thank you to 'American Revolution' for the tip. Local transmission shop had a wrecked 74 Blazer that was being parted out (ie was available for scavenging from ). For $120 I got a clean hood, Bolt in Roll bar (more on that later), Interior door handles, Weatherstrip for doors and took a reciprocating saw to the cracked top so I now have enough of a top to try to create a half cab in future.

Update in the score - it gets better. The wreck is at a transmission shop. The guys who was supposed to collect it and take it to the junkyard failed to show, so they checked it out further as they had time. Apparently has a brand new transfer case and recent 350 turbo transmission / driveline so i'm getting them swapped out onto my 75 for labor costs only, as this one has the same 4 inch lift. This gives me a couple of years to either a) save for the work to put a 700r4 in there or b) learn enough to put a 700r4 in there.

If you're dedicated, there were times that I could not bring a parts truck/car home to where I lived so I rented a 10x20 storage bay for a month to part it out in, then have it hauled off on around day 28 or 29...
It gets even better when you figure out that lots of places have $1 move in specials with no contract term (ie oftentimes public storage) |

the plot thickens. apparently the transmisson on my truck is a 400. NOT a 350 as i was told when I bought it. The transfer case appears to be a 205 (it has the small circular plate with the three small bolts on the rear of it). The donor truck has a reconditioned NP205 but a 350 transmission. Whats the difference between the 400 and 350 transmission?

400 is a little stronger, but a 350 will work for what you will be using it for. The 350 also takes a little less power to turn, which is also a plus. The 205 case is a gear drive case (probably one of the strongest ones available), where your current 203 is a full time, chain driven case.

Here are the two transfer cases. Both as far as I can see NP205. First one is mine second the donor vehicle. I think the 350 is the better condition of the two transmissions. I there ANY reason that the current tranny (the 400) would NOT fit to the other transfer case if that was the way I decided to go? Are there variations of NP 205 i might be unaware of? Also as my truck has no front driveline when i got it, I ASSUME that to use the 2WD function of the NP 205 I need Warn Hubs on the front wheels and I need to manually turn them to 'free' before engaging 2WD??

Decision made,. getting the donor truck 350 transmission and the rebuilt NP205. When it comes off they will let me know what state the tranny is in. As ever the help here is tremendous and knowledgeable and much appreciated.

So I now have the Rebuilt NP205 and the TH350 transmission on my truck. The transmission had also been rebuilt very recently so I'm am highly pleased with the outcome. New tranny transfer case and front driveline connected.. Now all I need to do is fit WARN hubs so I can use the 2WD setting on the transfer case. This brings me to my question. its a single lever and the markings are 4H, 2 ,N and 4L. Having never needed to use it before i realized I don't know the process for shifting between settings. Do I have to have the transmission in neutral? is there nay difference apart from ratio from 4H to 4L?

You need to come to a complete stop before shifting between 4H/2 and 4L. and vice-versa..
You should be able to shift on the fly between 2 and 4H as long as your hubs are locked of course. |

I haven't fitted the hubs yet so 2WD isn't an option as yet. That shifter is STUCK though. tried it cold and tried it hot. it is NOT moving - got to take it back into the transmission shop today
