700R4 install question??? about electric plug

Hello All, just got a low mileage; clean; GM Goodwrench 700R4 trans... i understand what i need to do as far as driveshaft shortenend, change/ move cross member, etc;

I wanted to ask all the Gurus what i needed to do with the 4 wire plug here on the driver's side of the trans? I have heard that you need to loop out certain pins here/etc to keep it from locking up??

Also, am i correct in just thinking I can get an electronic speedometer to connect to the sending unit on the trans?

Check out TCI and Bowtie overdrives for som info. Search this forum in the drivetrain section for diagram to lock up TQ when it shifts into 4th for a do it yourself mod.

Pull the electro and see if you have the plastic gear onthe shaft to drive the mechanical. There were a few that had the internal guts to drive a mechanical speedo. If not, hit up a local trans shop and buy the stuff from a core trans. It will require tailshaft dissasembly and pulling the ring to press the gear onto the shaft. Easier and cheaper than going with an electro to mechanical conversion box.

Yes you can connect an aftermarket electric speedo to this trans sender, if you want to. In addition to the lock up kit, you will also want to get the correct setup for the TV cable. Bowtie overdrives is about the best info/parts available for the do-it-yourselfer.

A drawback to trying to make your particular trans useable with a mechanical speedo again, is chasing gear combinations in the trans to make your OEM speedo accurate. Much easier to install an electric speedometer unit, calibration takes about 5 minutes and be done.

Be sure to understand how the TV (Throttle valve) cable works and how the angle and adjustment is done. Improperly installed it will tear the inside of your tranny apart.

I used a light green gear when I swapped mine from electro to mechanical and with a 235/75/15 it is 3 mph indicated faster at the cluster at 55 mph....so it's reading 58.

Use the TV made easy kit from bowtie overdrives for you carb and get it in and adjusted before you drive it. I used the lockup controller from Ron Francis wire works on mine and it works good. Have the indicator for lockup wired to a bulb and in the hole for tandem lock. That way I can see when it locks up and adjust as needed to get it where I wanted. I used the Lokar shifter. Looks like it is still a stick setup. It fits good under the high hump in the 66. Can be tight in a low hump truck.

sorry for my stupid questions, but why would you want to manually lock it in?

another ?, will the 350 cooler lines just connect to the 700R4?

once i get everything and save some $$ for the driveshaft mod will be tackling this upgrade and will post in my "build"

Some guys run a toggle switch to manually lock it in, but I always run them to lock up when it shifts into 4th and unlocks with a vacuum switch from engine vacuum. Some run a brake switch to unlock, but also redundant. When you let off the throttle, it unlocks with the vacuum set up. I could see toggle on to lock it in 3rd when towing, other wise it's just one more thing to remember. if you do run a toggle, run a light to let you know its on/off

When it come to the tv cable part just follow there instructions and it will be fine.

This is how I run mine, with the vacuum switch. It feels like another gear when it locks in. In my opinion it's much easier to run this way. I don't have to think about it at all.

I run a toggle switch. I dont uaually forget it as it really becomes habbit. It is nice to be able to lock it in 3rd gear for going up hills and stuff. It is kind of a pain also, but I don't mind.
