Wiring a Generator using an Alternator harness

Hello all! I am restoring a truck for a gentleman. He had purchased a wiring harness years ago at Carlisle. It is new, however it is setup for an alternator conversion. Unfortunately he is pretty strapped for cash and can't afford to go all alternator or to get a generator harness. So to my question, any clues on how I could make the harness I have work with a 12v generator? All the other wiring has been routed as intended, just wanted to see if I could get someone with experience in this area to offer any suggestions before I start 'testing' other ideas.

the battery wire that goes to back of alternator would hook up to the battery terminal on voltage regulator.you would then make your own harness from generator to regulator,field F from gen to F on regulator,Armature A on gen to A on regulator,ground from gen case to mounting of regulator case.that should make it work if regulator and generator are good.Be sure to polarize once it is all hooked up.The two wire plug will not be used just tape back to harness in case you later install alternator.

One thing, if he doesn't have a good regulator, one of those new costs almost as much as a basic internal regulator alternator.

Here locally at Napa a regulator for a generator for a 59 Chevy pickup is 65.99 http://www.napaonline.com/Catalog/Ca...125_0354843091

An internal regulator alternator that fits a 75 Nova is 66.94 here at Napa and that is probably pretty high compared to O'reillys or Autozone.

If he has all the pieces you can save him a few bucks running the generator but if you have to have him buy some new pieces there won't be any saving.
