Re: New LS swap/install questions

Here is a picture of where the MAF is. The code is MAF and intake air. Sorry I didn't take a picture of that.

Re: New LS swap/install questions

Ok so I reset the computer and cleaned the MAF. Ran it without the MAF connected ran smooth. So I hooked up the MAF and he didn't change. So I checked the scan tool and this is what I got.
So was it just a learn that the computer needed? Or combination of cleaning and learn?

Re: New LS swap/install questions

As I play with this more I start seeing things. What should the MAF read on the scan tool in (LB/S)?

Re: New LS swap/install questions

The VSS code is gonna play into that "lock/unlock" feeling you mentioned earlier. Normally I would say to check the VSS wiring, but afaik the 6l80e doesn't use a regular external VSS...so I'm not sure what can cause that code.

Is there a gasket used where the MAF plugs in/ do you have it?

Put a zip tie on that little vacuum nipple, they can suck past. I used a random plug once that wasn't heat resistant and it melted a hole in it.

Your STFT looks alright, but the LTFT's both are high (and what about 3 and 4?). It still has a little bit of the vibe of air leaking past somewhere.

Have you tried the starting fluid/carb cleaner method of leak detection?

Re: New LS swap/install questions

I figured that the vss code may be from the lock issue. Thanks

The MAF has a red silicone oring it looks to be ok and fits snugly.

After all the reading I had done. Doesnt the LTFT's adjust to make the STFT's 0? So maybe I haven't let it run long enough to get the LTFT to adjust?

I will be checking the carb cleaner method just have to get some when I get a new MAF.

On the scan tool the MAF always reads like .01 or .02 lbs/s shouldn't that be higher? In my mind if the MAF is reading basicly 0 than the computers would lean out right?

Re: New LS swap/install questions

Ok so I was reading .01lbs/s which translates to 8.6 g/s. Is that what everyone else has at idle for MAF reading?

Re: New LS swap/install questions

How big of a change in the MAF reading at 2k rpm? Is it going up to like 11, or way more/less?

Re: New LS swap/install questions

I sprayed carb cleaner round the intake and didn't really see or feel a difference.I sprayed under the TB and the scan tool read StFT's dropped for a second but than I couldn't get it to do it again.

Re: New LS swap/install questions

ok so yesterday I took the truck for a longer drive put on about 25 miles. tried it with the MAF connected and disconnected. When the MAF was connected the trans shifted funny (up shifted and down shifted) on normal acceleration and the motor didnt run very well.(stumbled coughed etc). so I disconnected the MAF and the motor idled great about 630 rpm and the trans shifted like a new car, nice and smooth....
this MAF or leak or problem whatever you call it is making me mad..... should I just remove the intake and check for leaks?

Re: New LS swap/install questions

I used the original intake and cut it up. I tried to seal with silicon but it didn't work to well so I used fiberglass. Sorry, but that is probably not going to help you on yours but it was a small leak and threw a code. Also, leak was after MAF sensor.

Re: New LS swap/install questions

Wow you cut it up? Ok cool I will try some staring fluid. If not I am going to remove it and check the intake.

Re: New LS swap/install questions

First c10, go to "motor.com" and click on magazine articles. Find july 2006, article "successful maf diagnosis" by Sam Bell. Once you are at the actual article, warm up your printer and click on download pdf and print and save this info. Its top notch, it talks about theory of ops, fuel trim, lab scope readings etc. Motor.com articles will take you to the front seat of the bus. You will need to look at each month and click on each article highlight sometimes to get the full jist of what the article is about. I'm probably repeating myself but take an evening with your pc and print every and all articles of interest and if you need to take your vehicle to a repair place and you hand them these articles i bet it would be of help, as there is too much to remember. Some of these articles are obviously sourced from the oem's so it doesn't get any better. I have a thick book of many motor articles and that is my bible, along with my fluke meter and my autoenginuity software for diagnostics. I can labscope trace 4 channels at once live and look for glitches, etc, on my laptop going down the road. Good luck, Brian Fuller

Re: New LS swap/install questions

Thanks 68 I will check that out.
Litlvic I cleared that code and haven't seen that code again.
I think it was the horrible running of the motor and maybe the brake TC lock up thing.

Re: New LS swap/install questions

Man. I took some time to get the a/c charged and installing the heater shutoff valve. So I took off the air filter. After I installed the heater control valve I started the motor without an air filter and the MAF connected.if sounded like it was running pretty good not like before. So I hooked up the scan tool and the stft's were like 6 and the LTFT's were like -4-8. So I let it run for a little bit. Then stuck the air filter back on. And as soon as I did te motor almost died. Stumbled and then went way rich. Running like crap. Stfts 29.7 and LTFT's 69. Took off air cleaner and went back to normal. Has anyone experienced that? Could it be the angle of the air filter to MAF?

Re: New LS swap/install questions

Question; did the o.e. intake have a special tube section that mated to the MAF, that the aftermarket intake didn't keep? The reason I ask, is a friend and I sat down and noticed the aftermarket parts from JET etc for the 9,10,11 trucks have a small metering tube that mounts under the MAF, getting it an air channel to sample. Without this, I imagine its reading un-metered turbulent air, which would cause erratic problems.

or
Move the MAF further up the intake path, instead of directly behind the filter. Sounds like the filter is scrambling air flow and confusing the hell out of the MAF. Some can get away with that (screen style), but its technically not ideal, as the MAF doesn't have room to read straight air.

Re: New LS swap/install questions

Can you access a second MAF to try? My experience was from the TPI era, but we faced similar issues on a 85 Vette and it was simply a bunk MAF (that was new).

Re: New LS swap/install questions

Well that makes sense if there is a channel or groove that forces air to pass the MAF. I have a 2013 at work with the same motor I will take a look at the air cleaner into and see what it has. I wonder if all the blade drop in type MAFs have this tube or channel.

Re: New LS swap/install questions

This might make things more confusing but:

I started seeing things like this listed for 2011

Then after that, I saw an image of a similar style sensor, but they added the screen? (google said 2011, i don't know for a fact if it is)

I'm not sure how exactly the 2011's MAF was configured, but the thing that I see in common, is that one way or the other, something is straightening out the air to give it a smooth sample, instead of turbulent air.

Re: New LS swap/install questions

Well looking at the last picture you posted my maf may not be low enough especially since the aluminum tube is 4" and not 3"like the stock one. I may just cut the tube and tig weld it lower in the tube.
