87 Chevy Truck - Interior Electrical Noise Question

What do I check? My truck has a whining or buzzing noise inside similar to a radio interference noise. It is a radio delete truck so I know its not that. Makes the noise with a/c on or off. Anyone know what I should check next. Thanks

Check your cig lighter. I was hearing a whining noise as well and looked inside the cig lighter and it was badly corroded/didnt work... Replaced with a 12V power supply that fit the hole perfectly and the noise is gone, and bonus now I can charge my cell in my truck...

Re: 87 Chevy Truck - Interior Electrical Noise Question

Its more like engine noise going through something. When you rev up the engine the noise gets louder. Can only describe it as one like in a radio going through the speakers. I am going to trouble shoot some more this weekend, just not sure what.

Re: 87 Chevy Truck - Interior Electrical Noise Question

I had a whining/grinding type noise that I couldn't place. It only happened while I was rolling, but not when I was sitting still and revved the engine.

I thought it was a bearing. I thought it might be a rotor. It couldn't be either one because I replaced the rotors, calipers, and discs when I lowered the truck and replaced all of the bearings.

Until I got on here and did a search. I found out that the speedometer cable can make the exact noise I was hearing if it needed to be lubricated. So, I lubricated it. And the damn noise is gone. Some will tell you the right way is to unhook the cable from the back of the speedo, pull it out through the firewall, unhook it from the transmission, pull the cable up most of the way out of the sheath and then put it back in while lubing it with white lithium grease.

That probably is the right way. I just unhooked the cable from the back of the speedo and then sprayed some motorcycle cable lube in the sheath, making sure it got onto the cable. That worked for me.

I needed to replace the parts I did anyway - I had no idea how old any of those parts were - but I might have waited until I could rebuild the entire front end. Now I have to go back in there and rebuild the ball joints, tie rod ends, pitman arm, idler arm, and control arm bushings.

I think it may be something to do with the distributor. Noise is coming through the firewall. Has new cap and rotor and wires so not sure exactly what it is yet.

Re: 87 Chevy Truck - Interior Electrical Noise Question

I have no idea what the problem is, but it reminds me of the static suppressors which were on my 1963 Corvette (and all 63-67 Corvettes). These were metal shields which were held against the block by the spark plugs and designed to suppress static radio interference. Just a thought - maybe you have a plug wire/spark plug issue? It is not likely, since you have a metal bodied truck, not a fiberglass bodied Vette.
