Rebuild or Replace

Exploring my options. Looking for opinions on rebuilding my 250 6 Cyl or replacing it with something different. The 6 is original to the truck and has a Saginaw 3 speed trans.

Like said..depends on what you wanna do with your truck...you can easily beef these 6 bangers up to embarrass V8's...or you can rebuild em stock and enjoy a unique truck..so many people have V8's in their trucks that its almost boring sometimes to go to car shows..no offence to V8 owners..just meaning...ya pop the hood of one car..V8...the next..V8..and ect ect...then..suddenly boom..6 banger!!!! That's whats nice to see! Something different..more unique. If I was you...now this is me speaking..I'd rebuild the 250 stock and turbo it to 8 pounds of boost and bolt on a nice 5 speed trans behind it..a stock 250 on 8 pounds of boost will put out at least 300 HP....do a little head work and some turbo pistons and a turbo cam and yer looking at 350 hp or better...so..its all in what you wanna do...Here's a picture of my 292..48 years old internally with a 600 CFM edelbrock, clifford intake and headers, and an HEI. Runs strong...I'd take on a 305 or 327..and when I'm done hot rodding the engine..I'd easily take on a high out put 350.

Just want to get it back on the road as my daily driver. Not looking to hot rod it but a little more HP wouldn't hurt. Keeping the 3 speed for now. Don't really want to change it any more than it already is with the CPP lowering kit and brake upgrade I already did. I like it as it is! Where is the best place to buy a master rebuild kit? Rock auto used to list them for around 650 but I didn't see them available.

Northern auto is a good place. I bought some stuff to put my 292 together from them not too long ago.

You'll want to have the engine apart to make sure you are getting the kit you need before you buy it, though. if you don't want to have the truck apart for too long, one thing you might consider would be buying another good running 250 and rebuilding that one. IME the 250's turn up pretty regularly on craigslist for cheap; something like $150-200 a lot of times.

Or you could swap the "spare" one in while you rebuild the one that came in there, if it is in fact the original engine.

(I wonder what the actual difference is between the two?)

At any rate, I'd also suggest upgrading to the nicer brass freeze plugs and moly rings for the extra couple of dollars. (They don't have it listed on the site for the '66-'70 kit, so I guess you'd have to call them about it.)

Slightly bigger carb, intake and headers and HEI will give you a bit more power as well as slightly better mileage. Redline has master rebuild kits as well...they're on Ebay.

Thanks for all the info T.J. Northern has some good prices. I installed brass freeze plugs last year and recently purchased and installed a Weber 32/36 and a HEI dizzy from Tom Langdon. Just need to tear it down and put it back together.
