widen rear stepside fenders
Anyone got good tips/pics/threads of how to widen my 66 rear fenders? I could do a 2-inch or a 3-inch. Thanks for any guidelines.

Re: widen rear stepside fenders
you mean widen out past the cab, or just add tubs to the inside of the bed?

Re: widen rear stepside fenders
I’ve never seen anyone widen original steel fenders, but I have seen fiberglass fenders made wider to begin with. Unfortunately on the ones I saw, they didn’t widen the complete step to match. They only widened the rear of the step where it fit the fender which tapered forward to the original width at the front of the step (and looked goofy).
Since there are so many compound curves to deal with, you might find the solution Lakeroadster came up more appealing. He widened the whole bed to bring the fenders out to match the width of the cab, and then did mini-tubs. I would have done this to my truck, but the idea never occurred to me until I saw his truck, long after mine was finished: http://community.webshots.com/album/...XxKOW?start=48 |

Re: widen rear stepside fenders
I think Brother's sells stepside fenders that are 3" wider....
...and are expensive... I'm sure they're listed in the catalog I have at home, but I just did a quick search and can't find them online. |

X2 on lakeroadsters approach. John does some neat garage fab/engineering.
I'm considering following his lead when I get to that point.

Re: widen rear stepside fenders
I had a feeling people were talking about me today
Widening the bed takes a lot of little steps, but they are manageable for the home shop fabricator guys that have a welder, a sawzall and a drill press. Widening the fenders takes considerable body skills.... beyond what I was willing to attempt. But mostly I widened the bed because wider fenders throw off the proportions of the bed, IMO. Most casual observers don't even notice my changes to the bed. Here are some photos of 55 Ford rear fenders that a guy widened.... See what I mean about proportion? But to each their own... it's all good. Last edited by lakeroadster; 01-20-2011 at 07:48 PM. |

that ford actually looks pretty sweet now that I see it. I thought it would be kinda goofy.
