Will 1987-1991 blazer fuel tank work?

Anyone on here try using a stock efi tank from a 1987-1991 chevy or gmc Blazer/jimmy on any Ls swap? Can you please share your experience or post pics with this tank?!

I'm building a 72 chevy k5 blazer, Ly6, 700r4 Bowtie stage ll, np205

I read that GM made these tanks with internal baffles to keep the fuel from sloshing etc.. I also see I can swap a walbro 255 internal pump into the stock sending unit pump location?!!

I don't need any fuel issues while I'm miles deep in the Back country Elk Hunting
Thanks

I'm interested in this for future reference as well. Seems plausible unless there are differences in the rails/cross-members on the newer blazer from the 72. Of course those can be modified.

Re: Will 1987-1991 blazer fuel tank work?

Thats what all us square body boys do!

Yes, 87-91 blazer/burb tansk work perfect. They do have the internal pump and baffling. To work with the LS all you have to do is drop in an EP381 acdelco fuel pump (or equivelant) which is physically exactly the same as the 87-91 low pressure pumps, but is a high pressure unit. Its out of something like a 97 one ton chevy truck.

So thats it! 87-91 tank, EP381 pump, done!

I perfomed this install on my 1987 square body c10 a few years back and i had many miles of trouble free driving. confirmed. the ep381 fuel pump performed flawlessly.

I believe they are the right width, but I think you have to move a crossmember.

Personally, I don't like the big tanks. Thats 300 pounds and $130 hanging back there.

Re: Will 1987-1991 blazer fuel tank work?

The tank I used in my 84 K10 came from my LS swapped 81 K5 it does not have baffles, I used an 03 silverado fuel pump module which has the bucket that acts like a baffle, a vette works tank ring, and have not had any issues in the rocks, sand dues etc in 110deg heat. Here is a video of the swap into the K10 when it was all said and done I welded a piece of angle in the rear cross member.

I'm using an '87 tank and sending unit in my '72. I put a Walbro 400 in it though.

I haven't had a chance to mount the tank yet but I looks like it should fit.

Re: Will 1987-1991 blazer fuel tank work?

I figure the 31 gal tank will benefit me because Elk hunting is a 250 mile trip one way! With that being said I guess it would be a PIA to get over the mountain passes with that much weight in back plus towing a flatbed aluminizer with 2 atvs also?!

That is the tank I am working on installing now. Biggest hurdle is hooking up the fill neck. Not sure how I am going to tackle that just yet.

Looks good!! What are the bars that run above to brace it called? The problem I see if it was under my blazer is my fuel tube/gas cap is on the drivers side?! Can that tank be turned so the filler neck faces the driver side?
Looks Good though, thanks for sharing pics!!

Yes it can be turned. The slanted edge on the bottom will just be facing the front instead of the back. I plan on doing it that way. I should be installing mine later this week. I'll try and post some pics of the fitment.

Re: Will 1987-1991 blazer fuel tank work?

Am I correct that there were two sizes of Blazer tanks? I had two in storage and installed the smaller of the two into a '63 SWB. I used a door in the fender from a square body truck for filler access.

I still have the larger tank but I thought it might be out of a Suburban. Was there a difference? Any dimensions handy?

I believe it's 25 and 31 gallons. The dimensions are almost the same. The 31 just hangs down a few more inches.

Those bars are just upper mounts. I actually cut them out and welded in square tubing so there would be more surface area for rubber insulation. You can flip it around but there is a slant cut in the rear of the tank to aid in ground clearance when approaching an incline. I plan to cut the filler neck and weld it in a different spot.

Seems like this swap is a no brainer if you are going fuel injected. It's funny I have never seen anyone do it before.

Re: Will 1987-1991 blazer fuel tank work?

This is the same tank I purchased for my LS swap. I have only read one other thread where someone used this tank. It's definitely more cost effective then most options out there. I picked up the tank from classic industries for $89 and a sending unit off of rock auto for $59

Re: Will 1987-1991 blazer fuel tank work?

I plan on using this tank for my lq4 swap. How do I connect braided fuel line to the sending unit? Will hose clamps work or is there a fitting to convert to an style?

Thanks for the answer. I found a replacement fuel sending unit with threaded fittings.

I would like to see some picture of how much these tanks hang below the truck.
