Is this engine accurate?
Heres an ad for a 63 firetruck that says to have a 409 in it. It has been for sale for about a month now with no one buying it which makes me belive its just a 348 and no one checked the numbers. Usually anything 409 is gone pretty quick. But from what I have looked at, after finding a 409 in a 66 80 series truck, is that the 409 wasnt available until 66 and in only 80 series truck i believe. if I am wrong feel free to correct wont hurt my feelings but I didnt know if since it was a fire truck they couldve gotten the 409 or not.

I think that's actually a 62 judging by the grill....No pictures of the engine so I couldn't tell anyway...weather a 409 was available or not I'm not sure...I thought the 409 didn't come out until 66 anyway...

I believe the 409 was built from 61 or 62 through 66? I could be off a little

the 1963 Chevy Truck Shop manual lists the 409. and in the cooling system specs the 409 is associated with the CLM80 and T80 models.

409 was only available in the biggest/heaviest spec truck. c80 sounds about right. The next smallest size truck could only be had with a 348. There was a thread somewhere... let me try to find it.

Thats for a 65 though. If I'm reading correctly the 409 could only be had from 63-65 in the 80 series trucks. |

also, FWIW, the '66 shop manual supplement indicates that the new 366 (which would become the 396) had replaced both the 348 and 409.
also my '60 manual and the '61 supplement list only the 348 so, I don't know about '62 but they did have 409s by '63 and they were gone by '66. remember, back in those days you could basically build your own vehicle on the order sheet so it's quite possible one could have ordered a 409 in lieu of a 348 for your 60 series in those years that they were available. I've got lists of RPOs somewhere, I'll see what they say sorry my RPOs are just for light duty trucks

I realized the 80 series truck we found the 409 in was a 1965. That was my bad. But I remember looking up some information, and maybe Woogeroo had it, but i believe it said that in 65 you could get teh 409 in the biggest truck, i believe the 80 series.

1965 was also the last year for the 409 in full size Chevy cars. It was replaced mid-year by the new 396.

FWIW easiest way to tell if it's a 348 or 409 is dipstick location.
409 on pass side. 348 on drivers side. |

tk 409's were a little different inside than car eng's. lower comp for sure.

Yeah I found that out with our 409, but i know they had 252 horsepower in a truck with like 375lbs of torque. I havent gotten him to send a picture of the engine
