Under dash ash tray

Does anybody think that a repop under dash ashtray is a good idea? Don't know if it would be functional or just for looks.

I'm not that far yet Winston. Just trying to find out how much interest there is first before I start investing money.

I think it will need to be functional and the marketability will depend on how original it appears. That will require dies for stamping.

Re: Under dash ash tray

The percentage of smokers is considerably less today than in the 1960's.

I would have no use for an ash tray but ash tray like space with a USB connection for the phone would be handy.

i smoke and will be smoking in my burban that has the factory A/C dash. i could use the USB function for stereo sound output, as we need it for our Bose speaker and to power our AC/DC convertor on long road trips, because we have the factory 2 knob radio and 10 ohm speaker. So if i can have both ash tray/power output (to free up my cig lighter) that would be great for my needs

Re: Under dash ash tray

I love the fact that you're wanting to repop a rare, hard to find item, but I'm not sure if you could ever recover your tooling investment on this one. From what I have seen, the guys who are interested in the underdash ashtrays are the guys who already have factory A/C and want to maintain factory originality. In the '60-'66 world, that's a pretty small percentage. However, in the last year, we now have a member making A/C faceplates. The aftermarket companies know the surging popularity of our trucks and now offer A/C systems that with a little bit of fabrication, can use the original A/C faceplate. There might be an interest in an underdash ashtray for guys looking to do this system.

Thanks for wanting to do this, and also for your power brake pad. It's not easy (or cheap) to prototype and tool up parts. Maybe you can take a poll and see what the results are?

Yeah, I pretty much decided that the tooling cost would kill the project. However I will still keep the gears turning in my head

Re: Under dash ash tray

a couple things that might be easier to tool up, and might have a bigger customer base...
60-63 radio delete plate-this one is pretty intricate- might be hard
64-66 radio delete plate-this one might be easier
60-66 heater delete plates- these are quite popular, seems like they always sell when they hit the classifieds-these also might be a easy piece to produce.

another more intricate piece would be the firewall portion of the "High Hump" shift tunnel
I sold about 6 of them in a couple months time a few years back, but I ran out of cabs to cut up.
