Finally Got a running truck...

Been lurking forever, this is a great board. I finally bought an old truck. Been wanting one for a long time. I picked up a 63 GMC step side two weeks ago. Unfortunately, the engine blew on the way home! Picked up 350 on CL and had issues with that as well (see thread new engine, no good). We got the engine in today and it is running great.

A few issues I need to iron out:

1. The stock throttle linkage is binding so I nee an aftermarket cable. Any suggestions?

2. The truck rides like a brick! Its low! The back is notched and flipped. The PO stated that he heated/cut the front springs. I would like to bring the whole truck up 2 inches. I will be doing a disk conversion but it won't be for a while so spindles will have to wait. Not sure which direction to go. Any suggestions. I have been searching but there is SOO much info on here! The truck will be daily driven.

Really nice looking truck, I agree, it is a little low for my taste too, some will cringe that you want to "raise" your truck, but it is all a matter of personal preference. Welcome to the board!

Re: Finally Got a running truck...

Nice truck

I really like the satin blue and white.

You shouldn't have to change the throttle linkage to a cable, unless that is what you really want. If you post a pic. maybe we can help figure out what is wrong with it.

Changing the front springs is a simple fix for the front, but putting the differential back under the springs will raise the rear way more than 2". More like 6"+. A longer shackle and removing a few leafs will bring it back down some. You have to be careful taking out leafs as you could get some bad spring wrap on acceleration. I'm really not sure exactly what everyone is doing with leafs in the rear.

Re: Finally Got a running truck...

Lokar makes a pedal and cable that'll work on that with little mods.

Re: Finally Got a running truck...

Good looking truck. Stance looks great parked but I wouldn't want to drive it like that. But that's why I like air.

Re: Finally Got a running truck...

The throttle linkage pic is a little fuzzy but it appears you have the rod bolted to the carb. Unless it is pulling straight back it will need to roll as it moves. You could mount a ball stud and use the stock type link or extend the vertical arm up and to the passenger side to pull straight back.

Re: Finally Got a running truck...

I will have to dig and find a picture of what I did with my throttle linkage, but I used to small heim joints and a piece of.... I think 5/16 threaded Rod.

Lobuck64, I actually did something similar to that this afternoon. Great minds think alike perhaps?

Re: Finally Got a running truck...

Here is what I did. When I had changed out the intake manifold I misplaced the clip that connected the push rod to the carb linkage, so I came up with this.

Re: Finally Got a running truck...

I had the same issue with the throttle. I got this from jegs and saved the OEM pedal. The decision is yours, cable or rod.
