Porter built 1" narrow arms and cpp modular spindles need 2 in more
My buddy put a set of porter built 1" forward and 1" narrowed a arms on a pancaked 77 c10 cross with cpp modular drop spindles and brakes. The stock tie rods are at least 2 inches too long to be able to put any adjustment in the front end.Any suggestions on a shorter tie rod he can use.
Thanks jake

You could cut the tie rod down and have it threaded further up the tie rod.

That's what my thought was too, it seems like the easiest solution.

I had thought about running more threads on the links if they don't flare out any I will have to check them out agin. I guess he is loosing 1 in frm the shortened PB arm and what 3/4 from the modular spindles. Jake

He ended up getting some moog tie rods for an international scout that should do the trick.

Keep us up to date on how they work. If they work, I'll definitely be wanting the part # since I'm heading down the same road.

Re: Porter built 1" narrow arms and cpp modular spindles need 2 in more
this is what i got for when i switched to a rack and pinion. it puts the heim at the bottom of spindle to help with steering angle. Talk to porter built they were real helpful and nice parts.

He had to use parts that would fit stock tie rods on a 77 c10 not mustang rack. He did contact porter built they told him to get a adjuster that was 3.7 and the adjuster he was trying to use was 4 so the .25 of an inch would not do any good. But I think it's figured out I will take a pic at some point. Here is a pic of mine the steering is not adj in the pic and yes I know I need the inside jamb nuts lol Jake

Re: Porter built 1" narrow arms and cpp modular spindles need 2 in more
We have a 1" shorter adjuster sleeve for the narrowed PB arms. It's 1" compared to a factory. This will at least help and maybe only mean you have to trim .5" from each tie rod.

He has the cpp adjuster that is 4 in long that would be 3/4 shorter than the stock adj.the adjuster you are talking about is 3.7 so it .20 shorter Than the cpp it just was not enough to cut enough off and have the jamb nuts on and have room to adjust them as we saw it. If you had regular drop spindles and just the 1 in shortened arms I am sure they would work. Agin this truck has a 1 1/2 in pancaked cross 1 narrow and1 forward arms and CPP modular spindles I think all that together made our(his) issue. Jake

Re: Porter built 1" narrow arms and cpp modular spindles need 2 in more
For records keeping, I think they used moog es392r. Thread count/pitch is the same at 11/16-18, though I can't find info on taper with a simple search. Will need to do some additional research...
EDIT: Confirmed. It seems this part number is a viable shorter substitute. 73-87 outer (ES409R): Length - 6.75" Threads - 11/16-18(R) Rod Type - Male Config - Straight Small Taper - .593 Large Taper - .676 Taper Length - .664 Stud Thread - 9/16-18 Scout II Outer (ES392R): Length - 3.9" Threads - 11/16-18(R) Rod Type - Male Config - Straight Small Taper - .612 Large Taper - .703 Taper Length - .728 Stud Thread - 9/16-18 At first glance, the tapers appear different, but doing a little trigonometry yields the exact same taper of 7.125° (or 1.5" per foot). The stud length of the Scout part is .06" taller, or what I like to call negligible. My only concern would be if using the shorter, aftermarket sleeves is if you would get enough thread engagement between the inner/outer. Thanks to Jake and his buddy for doing the initial research!
