GMC hood ornament

Check out ebay item #151545559207.It is a 1960,61,62 GMC truck hood ornament. Bidding started out at $100.00 and two inexperienced bidders trying to out do each other have run it up to $660.00 and it still has 6 days left on it! Smart aren't they!

Re: GMC hood ornament

Sometimes these have nothing to do with a bidding war and more to do with what is called shill bidding. The seller gets his/her friends or family to bid up the item in hopes that others will get caught up in the frenzy. Ebay rarely steps in to stop it since the more something sells for the more they make off the fees.

If this item truly is riding high on a bidding war, my hat is off to the seller. But to me it sure smells of shill bidding, which hurts everyone by artificially driving up prices.

Re: GMC hood ornament

I ended up going to 325.00 for mine, I won. But was getting real nervous in the last minutes. I had put the max bid at $400. It's NOT a 58-59. It's only 60-61, because of the hood change

Re: GMC hood ornament

Yes, Kenfused could be right. It could be shill bidding but we will never know.
Fleecebay may be the big winner. Then again, whatever someone is willing to pay...

I gave $375 for mine and its pitted pretty badly as pot metal does. Even NOS in the box usually has some pits and blemishes.

Re: GMC hood ornament

Got mine for $45...buy it now price. All it needs is a sanding and rechrome....and I believe this is a 57 bel air ornament. Sorry...I don't have any up close pictures. Anyhow I wasn't looking for a stock one per say cause chevy's didn't have that option that I'm aware of...I thought the ornament went well with the fins.

Huge difference TJ, yours is available reproduction and was mass produced. Last potmetal hood ornament I had replated was $800.00 for a quality job. My post above was only to show there is a demand for these rare "unobtanium" parts . If you look into the bid history of the guy pushing this up he is bidding on many DIFFERENT Ebay items, looks like a newbe to Ebay and hopefully a GMC enthusiast .

Re: GMC hood ornament

2,000 hood ornament on a 1000,000 truck isn't that outrageous. Here's one on a GMC ( cameo )

Re: GMC hood ornament

I have two of the 58-59 birds in very nice original chrome for my 1959 pickup projects and I paid a$400 to $500 a piece 10 years ago and was happy to find them for that. Here's one of my old barn finds of years ago.

Re: GMC hood ornament

It appears to be the hood emblem from a 1959 El Camino and Impala equipped with a 348:

Hard to believe anybody would take the trouble to mask around that, unless they just painted over the emblem!

This emblem actually seems to make a very nice fit to the hood. I'm surprised there haven't been more added to these trucks, but perhaps due to the rarity of 348/59 Chevys & El Caminos there aren't many to be found.

Thanks for posting this link. It's fun to even look at something that looks so nice:

And the ornament isn't necessarily perfect, chrome items sitting in a box for 50+ years usually have scuff marks, etc. But figuring the cost to replate something to this condition, the sale price doesn't seem all that ridiculous to me, it's simply a matter of whether a person wants it that bad and can afford it or not.
