Neutral / Reverse Lights Wire Re Routing

The light green / dark green wire pair on my '74 GMC 1500 runs from the manual transsmison under the stick shift under the trans tunnel forward to the engine bay, makes a sharp right on the fire wall then enters the car under the break booster to get plugged in under the steering column. The cable is about 10 feet long.

Has anybody just ran that wire inside the cab from under the shifter boot under the dash to its destination? My guestimate says the wire would need to be only about 2 feet long. Or in some other clever way?

Thank you
