Vibrator !!! Vibrating roof skin that is. Advice needed please.
Hard to believe but my truck can exceed 50mph.
However, at that sort of speed the roof starts vibrating with an irritating drone. My truck has that padded headliner thats mounted to presumably 8mm plywood. When you look at the outer roof skin, there is a dent toward the rear but also a hole that seems to have been filled with filler or window putty and painted over. So I am not sure if someone has previously attempted to silence the drone successfully. I am NOT removing the roof skin. So what possible solutions are out there that works. One idea (may be totally wrong) is to drill 4-5 holes from inside where the headliner sits, and to squirt expanding cavity foam in there. Another could be a 500ml tube of silicone pumped in from the top or bottom as I want to weld the hole closed after treatment. Advice, photos, warnings all appreciated. Thank you.

Postal service works at a set speed so part will get here when they get it here. Sometimes stuff takes 5 days, sometimes two weeks. Looking forward to it though. Have a couple of ideas for making a handle for it too.

Don't use the "Great stuff" style expanding foam, for some reason that stuff seems to encourage rot in the steel panels it touches.
I would look into anti-flutter foam, it is what the car manufacturers use these days to stop just the sort of vibration you are dealing with. Fusor 124 is probably the most common. It requires a specialized gun to dispense, but you might be able to find a body shop who will squirt it in for the cost of the product and a few bucks for their time. Can't weld afterward though, it isn't rated for that sort of heat.

What if you pulled down your padded headliner and used some generic door seals behind it. Is the sound the sheet metal vibrating against the wood?

Grizz,
If you think it is where the internal strengthening rib has become detached from the roof panel then use this stuff- Tiger Seal UPol TIG/NB 310ml Polyurethane -... Stays flexible and sticks to anything. Use your regular Caulking gun but stick the tube in hot water for 10 minutes before you try and use it. WEAR GLOVES. Did I say WEAR GLOVES? Do not use expanding foam, you will rot the panels quicker than you can say WEAR GLOVES.... Did I tell you to WEAR GLOVES? P. |

Pull down the headliner, add Dynamat sound deadner to the entire roof, reattach headliner. Done!!!

My roof was dented in the rear portion when I started my build, and although it didn't look major the inner panel was creased also. I made sure that there was a gap between the inner & outer panels when I repaired it. and from what I have read in this post, there has been some sort of filler added, I am guessing that there is not a sufficient gap left between the two layers. I hate to say it, but the best bet would be to remove the dent, and refinish/repaint. You may be able to drill a hole(s) in the area of question on the inner panel under the headliner, and insert a structural bonding agent...SEM makes an epoxy type of caulk to basically glue body sides on vans....This would probably keep it from vibrating.
