gas tank and change info?

Hello
So I picked up a 1992 5.7 350 TBI Motor with A 700r4 To install in my 1958 3100 Apache. Can I still use the original gas tank behind the seat or do I have to relocate it and get another Just not sure if it needs more fuel lines. I am having all the emissions stuff omitted from the engine. and getting a stand alone harness to control the ECU

Thanks All
Bob :O)

Re: gas tank and change info?

yes you can use the old tank, just use a frame mounted fuel pump
old tanks are full of crud, clean it out and run a coarse filter before the pump and a fine filter after the pump

Re: gas tank and change info?

You will need to use an external EFI pump mounted below the tank (under the cab is ok) as well as run a return line to the tank from the TBI. Plus the stock tank is tall and un-baffled - not a great EFI tank, IMO.

Personally, I'd relocate the tank - even if you worked out all the issues I think the noise of all that happening right behind you might become a wee bit bothersome. There are several threads of folks having relocated tanks on the TF trucks.

Re: gas tank and change info?

A member here awhile back had pics of an Suzuki Sidekick tank between the rear frame rails. I kind of likes it. If you go to Rock Auto, you can get the tank AND EFI fuel pump as a package for like $350.

If you go another route and do an external fuel pump. I'll suggest the Ford external fuel pump. They used it on Vans, trucks in the 80's. You can pick up a new one for cheap.

That's a smoking price, but you can get the same (or similar) deal at Tanks Inc for a 16 gallon tank - either way you need to make sure the pump will deliver the correct pressure AND volume to your EFI system - usually rated in GPH or LPH @ a particular pressure.

IIRC GM factory EFI takes 58 psi but you should be able to confirm that by looking up the specs of your TBI unit and injector sizes.

Look at the Gas Tank Relocation threads here... one of the guys used a 17 or 18 gallon poly EFI side-fill tank for a 40s Ford car and it worked out great at the rear of his frame.

Re: gas tank and change info?

Find yourself a 48 or older chevy pickup, They are mounted from the factory between the frame rail and the drive shaft under the front of the bed. Filler neck is above the running board. You will have to run a return line from your injection setup back to tank. I don't know the capacity of the tank, but I'll guesstimate 16 gallons. Good luck !

Re: gas tank and change info?

The tank I was refering to is actually 17 gallons. You can get an 11 gallon for $75-$80 cheaper.

As far as the fuel pump goes. Suzukis run and 57 PSI. Whereas the GM TBI is 10 PSI. Of course, a regulator will be necessary. If you scroll through the Suzies, fuel pump section on the Rock, you'll find that the same pump is used on probably 3 dozen different vehicles. Some 4 cylinder, some 6, some 8.

I should be more than up to the task.
