1984 stepside 4x4

*copied from another forum*

picked this up last week, traded my 96 4runner for it.

1984 short box stepside, 4" lift (with blocks for now till I order a shackle flip), 35" tires, crappy rattle can camo paint job (will fix this), theres 4,000 miles on the TH400/NP205 and 383 stroker, 1800 stall converter, 3/4 ton axles with 4.10 gears(SF rear).

Plans

the paint is flaking and thin in spots so im thinking if I run it into the steam bay at work I can get most of it off. then I will decide from there on how good it comes out.

build new bumpers front and rear and mount my winch and LED light bar.

shackle flip

when I get my tax returns im going to drop in a 5.3L and sell the stroker.

here she is in all her glory

the paint has to go, so I took it into the steam bay at work and it was working, but it was working too well lol, took it down to bare metal in a couple spots so I stopped, I will just sand it down a bit and paint it all one color.

over last weekend I brought it into the shop. it had quite a few leaks going on, the P.O bought new polished aluminum valve covers for it but never put them on, so I put those on.

pulled the oil pan off, cleaned, painted, and reinstalled with a one piece oil pan gasket.

rear diff was leaking so I pulled the cover, lots of shavings on the magnet in there and pitting on the spider gears, here's hoping she holds out till I can get a set of tons put in.

one of the PO's frenched the original lights into the fenders.

Re: 1984 stepside 4x4

nothing picture worthy but I rebuilt the front driveline yesterday, took way longer than it should have, ended up rebuilding the cv along with changing u-joints. my son was there the whole time asking all kinds of questions, so proud to have a 3yo who is interested in trucks.

Re: 1984 stepside 4x4

about a month ago the truck came up with a problem where I had to keep it half choked off just to be able to drive it. hooked up a transducer in the fuel line and took it for a drive to check fuel pressure under a load. at an idle this engine needs 4psi and at full throttle it needs about 9psi, I had 4 psi at an idle and clear down to 3.1psi at full throttle. it took me a month to finally get a day and weather to work on this, but.....

today I said good bye to the piece of junk fuel starver

and said hello to old reliable

I still had a little stumble when bumping the throttle so I went to adjust my carb set screws, and one had backed out like 3 turns (I had just adjusted it a month ago). little lock tite and we should be good there. all in all it runs and starts a lot easier now, don't have to crank it for a minute to get it to fire up.

also since I was at it, I installed my new tailgate hinges, I only had one in there and a bolt shoved in backwards on the other side. theres not that much gap normally, I had the gate shoved to one side.
