Re: Anyone running year correct plates?

I agree. I have at least 10 vehicles running YOM plates in MI. The application clearly states not to be used for routine transportation (I just mailed in another application yesterday). $35 one time fee and stays current as long as you own the vehicle.
Also of note, insurance companies (at least in MI) will give a much lower rate for vehicles registered as "historical". I just had them quote a yearly premium for a '78 2wd Jimmy. $474 if registered with regular plates, $70 if registered with historical plates. I can't imagine my insurance costs if it weren't for the reduced historical plate rates.

Willowrun, As a fellow Michigander who runs YOM plates. My insurance Company also had a reduced rate. My agent told me that the first question out of his mouth after a claim would be "where were you going or coming from"?
That was enough for me to pay a littler extra on my premium

My standard reply would be "I was on my way from home to my friend's shop where I work on my truck" or vice-versa.

Re: Anyone running year correct plates?

I put a YOM plate on the truck when it turned 35 and became an antique. $40 in 2003 got me a new title issued as a 'specialty antique' with the plate number included on the registration. No annual renewal fees.

I did the same with the Buick 18 months ago and have to pay $17 annual renewal on that one. I guess someone in Topeka figured out that they were losing $$.

No travel restrictions here with a YOM plate, although I did have to suggest to a a Johnson County deputy that he needed to spend some more time on patrol. He pulled me over and asked what funny business I was trying to pull with that illegal plate. I handed him the registration showing the plate number and he spent fully 10 minutes on his radio getting educated. He brought the paperwork back with a sheepish look and the only apology that I've heard from an LEO.

The PO tried to make the 62 look older with the "W" deck lid and the snowflake Tail lights. I sold it about 6 years ago but have been eyeing it lately as the guy that bought it from me has been letting it sit , hasn't moved in the 4 months since I found it. I may see if he might want to trade it for some cash

All 5 of mine have period correct. Today at the good guys in Dallas I found a set of 1969 Texas truck plates that were never installed on anything. They still had the prison paper in between them! I will use them when I register my wife's 1969 suburban.

Re: Anyone running year correct plates?

I've been running correct plates on my older cars for years. They are easy to acquire and the State of Texas allows their use.

In Ohio the plates for my 71' resemble plates that persons convicted of their second or more DUI must display. So I do display them.

Re: Anyone running year correct plates?

Way up here in Alberta Canada I am and have been running my original 1971 Alberta plates on my short bed with no problems at all. I even had a Police Officer pull me over to ask if the truck was for sale or not, full lights and sirens going too haha. I lucked out as the plates are color matched to my truck in 1971.

Re: Anyone running year correct plates?

Here are my farm truck tags I got proper stickers for and just had validated to use legally. Next are the '67 Truck tags for my project. I'll wait to restore till truck is. Then I have these super rare N.O.S. '72 Virginia truck tags. too bad the last three numbers aren't 383 because that is the combo it will have once I build the motor (and swap TH400/NP205 combo in)

Re: Anyone running year correct plates?

In Iowa if you buy their version of antique plates and keep them in the glovebox for any peace officer to view if asked, you can run them.
Still on the hunt for my correct county though. Finding one is easy, two, not so much.

Similar here in Maryland. Historic or Antique registration required. Then another special registration which notes the vintage tag number on the paper slip. Historic/Antique plates must be kept in vehicle and presented to officer on request.

Whole caveat is with Historic and Antique plates, a safety inspection is not required in this state. Thus you are not supposed to be using it as a daily driver. Only weekends, holidays, or to and from a repair shop. That said, I have run vintage plates on my muscle cars and old trucks for decades and never had a problem. Though I do have 'Street Rod' plates on my GTO and have been stopped for a quicky look.

Re: Anyone running year correct plates?

That's one thing I fear with running the YOM plates is they stick out like a sore thumb. Ive never had an issue with historic plate because they look like any current plate except say historic on the bottom. That can be obscured with a plate frame. They can be spotted by the numbering/digits,too. But, again, at a glance they don't draw attention. i drive my truck a good bit and may end up not running these, as cool as they look

Those virginia plates are so rare because they are supposed to be black w/white digits. Even years were black and odd years white, but someone messed up the first batch and they issued them anyway till the right ones got made. There were unissued tags left over from that and that's what mine are

I have 72 for my GMC issued by DMV for $300.00 many years ago, these were never issued until I ask.

Re: Anyone running year correct plates?

My grandpa collects/restores/sells Kansas tags and he found me an original, in the plastic, never mounted 1969 Sedgwick County truck tag for my 69 CST. He gave it to me when I "finished" (which I realized that these trucks are never finished) restoring my truck. I think I paid $35 for registering an Antique, then pay like $15-20/year to renew it.
