Lower Moulding Installation....frustration
Does anyone know the 'trick' to installing the front fastener (back nut) on the lower wide moulding mounted on the door? (Drivers side in this case)
I am replacing this moulding on my truck and it is a challenge to get at the back nut on that. It is well hidden in behind the lower door hinge and I can not, for the life of me, figure out how they installed this originally....unless, it was installed with the door not yet mounted? Any info on this guys would be greatly appreciated. Many Thanks Coley

I'm pretty sure the door moulding was installed, before the fenders went on, at the factory.

If you have a box wrench with a pivoting end it seems like it could work. Probably would have to use some tape to hold the nut on the wrench until it starts. Luckily those nuts have a flat "skirt" at the base so it should stay in the wrench as you apply pressure. Good luck.

Just went out to the shop to check on my '71 Cheyenne Super, on this truck I changed doors, and reinstalled the lower trim...with the door off. In my view that's the only way to install that nut, the hinges cover it, no access. A person won't be able to get the nut started with your fingers. Good luck other wise.

I was hoping for some super secret nifty method or tool that someone had used to get this little back nut on the moulding fastener without removing the door or front fender. Now, that said...I have an idea that I'm going to look into that just might work to snug that moulding on there....hmm!! all good Coley

Just a thought, why don't you just move the location of that fastener to the farthest point you can access inside the door? All you would have to do is remove the inside door panel, and roll the window up.
Then you could add a sticky back fastener on the end if you think it will need it.

It is not needed if all other clips are present. I did as suggested above and just used another clip inside the door as far forward as I could get it.

I used the clips with the spurs that snap through the hole.

I have been able to remove and replace that screw several times. I add tape to the outside trim to hold it in place or jut to add pressure I guess an extra helper would be great but usually not available for me so I just tape it. I open the door as far as possible to still be able to get the the screw on which usually takes a couple or tries but I have never had that much trouble with it.I can start the screw with my fingers and then tighten with the 3/8 inch wrench.Planning to remove real soon and and wax behind there and will take some pics while doing it if interested.But yes it can be done without a problem or having to remove anything just a little patience first time especially.

i've found it's less hassle to remove/reinstall/realign the door. and i am happy with a good snug trim nut afterwards.

how about the lower back molding on the front fender 1972. The front nut is simple but the back is not. Any ideas on this one. I can feel it but thats about it. I think I might be able to probably wont get the back nut back on but then after several time the the one behind the door hinge I can do it fairly easy now.I may attempt it tomorrow.

I just did the trim on my 67 Short bed. I took both inner fenders off, used some tape to secure the nut inside a 1/4 drive, 3/8 deep socket and started it by hand. There is a hole in the fender's inner support structure to access the stud of the trim clip. You can access the hole in the fender through the door jamb area with the door open all the way.

If you take the inner fender out. Then take the bolt that holds the bottom of the fender in. You can pull out on the bottom of the fender enough to get your hand in there and put the nut on. Also enough room to get a wrench in there. Just work getting inner fender out. Taking it out also would allow you to get to the back of fender one also.

I just installed lower trim on a K5 Blazer after we aligned the doors and fenders. With the inner fenders off you can do what trucks72 said. Remove the lower fender bolt and pull the bottom of the fender away to get to the doors front trim stud and nut. In my opinion it’s a lot easier than trying to get to that nut on behind the door hung while working in the door jamb. Here’s a couple pictures.
