1979 Chevy Silverado tranny question.
Hello guys, got a question. I have a TH400 transmission bolted to a 350 engine. My truck has been in the shop due to a leaking transmission. I got a call today that the front tranny pump is causing the leak and pan needs to be replaced. I was told to replace the pump, I might as well have the tanny rebuilt. The cost of the total repair is in the neighborhood of $1500. I am not a transmission guy, so I dont know a lot about them but I have seen some online, through companies such as Jegs for $900/$1200 new/rebuilt. My question is, am I better of repairing mine or buying the new one and using the fly wheel and torque converter of the broken tranny?

Where I live, a very good shop charges $375 parts and labor to rebuild a TH350 if I take the trans to them. I doubt they would charge much more for a TH400. I have seen a trans shop remove a TH350 from a Chevy 2WD pickup in less than 30 minutes! So, another $1,125 to remove and replace it (your $1,500 total) seems high.
Regarding the torque converter, it should either be flushed on a special machine or replaced. You don't want to ruin a fresh trans rebuild with old fluid. A trans shop can buy a rebuilt converter from a parts supplier for less than $100. I just paid $64 exchange for a rebuilt (in the USA) TH350 converter from TRANSTAR with a 4-year warranty. Again, I doubt a TH400 converter costs much more.

MikeB, so you are saying roughly $475 in parts plus 2-4 hours of labor?
