Cruise control retrofit

I'm tired of keeping my foot on the gas pedal on a long cruise....I guess I'm spoiled now lol. So I want to put cruise control in my 74 but I need to know what I need and how to wire it up. I need to know what switch will work with my truck. Also my speedometer doesn't work I'm not sure how that's going to work out. My truck has the factory non-tilt column...don't know if that matters.
Truck has a '99 5.3 with an '02 4l60e.

Re: Cruise control retrofit

On a '99? Thats still DBC so you'd actually need the cable cruise box-thingy that physically manipulates the throttle cable. The wiring normally in the stalk can be done without a stalk, but it involves adding a pair of momentaries and a toggle do serve the same functions that the all-in-one stalk provides. The setup usually also wires into the stop switch to provide a "cancel" function and for safety reasons.

Re: Cruise control retrofit

I used the Dakota Digital stalk and had to use relays to reverse the way it switched. Here is a good thread to read through that has wiring diagrams and a lot of information.

One thing I did run into is that Chevy used at least two different length cruise cables. The first one I bought at the wrecking yard was too short from the bracket to the throttle body, it wasn't much but it would not work. Wiring was fairly simple, but took me about three hours to hook everything up. I have about $65 in my setup and love it!
