Re: PO has me PO'd

Question regarding your Bilstein install. I just installed a set on my Jimmy. I installed them with the black boots facing down since the Bilstein sticker would be upside down otherwise. No install info came with the shocks. I had my previous shocks mounted like yours with the boot up. I've seen shocks installed either way so don't know if their is a right or wrong. Do you know of any advantage/disadvantage to either way of installing them?

Thanks

Good question, dunno, but I will call Bilstein come Monday. Just think they look better with the boot up

Just went and looked, shocks are mounted correct with sticker readable in the down position, boot up.

May have run into another problem, as one of the brake drums seems to have a crack running all the way around it

Just gotta say rock autos return policy is second to none... called them with complaint, they emailed a shipping label, dropped the part off at FedEx, new part is on the way. They paid postage both ways, what a company, will buy from them again

Did you notice the crack before you painted it? That probably would not make me happy if I saw it afterwards

Ok, second part arrived, still cracked, they want to refund my money, but I still need a drum. So, I will try a AC Delco part this time and the heck with Raybestys

Re: PO has me PO'd

Rather then risk ruining my good console bottom, pulled a POS one off the shelf and cut into that, glad I did, because my cuts were a bit excessive. I may have to use the 73 and up bracket on the front of the console to elevate it a bit

Re: PO has me PO'd

Third time was a charm on the brake drum, but went with AC Delco this time, still Chinese but better quality

Anyway, did some more work to the dual handbrakes, adjuster screw installed, now to figure out what length to make cables

Rich, let me see if I can explain, if you re in the woods wheeling, and if you need to avoid a tree or rock you can make a tighter turn by putting truck into 2wd front axle, lock up one rear brake and turn to that side. Truck pivots on rear axle

Cutting brakes. Got it. Isn't it usually done with hydraulics and not mechanical? I'm the furthest thing from an engineer but isn't that putting a lot of stress on that mechanical linkage?

In pa. We aren t allowed to cut brake lines or splice. VT Blazer did his with solenoids and its easier. My two sons are mech. eng. So I ll run it by them to give you an answer

Sorry to hear about your setback with the flood, hope it all works out for you

Thanks for making that call, I just wasn't sure which way was correct mounting, most shocks I've seen (and had previously installed) I mounted like you did.

Swamp Rat had posted "are the Bilsteins gas charged? My Fox shocks are and they mount with the body up."

Yes, "5100 Series shocks use Bilstein's mono-tube high gas pressure design for consistent fade-free performance & long life."

Soooooooooooo, I've learned something new. It's a gas thing!

Thanks everyone

I cut the boots off of mine. Looks better and ensures junk doesn't get trapped in the boot, eating up the shaft. Keep up the progress Jim.
