Re: Classic black CALIF PLATES

I have yet to see anything other than a computer generated sample. I wonder just how close they are going to be to the vintage plates. Something tells me that only a very close match is going to cut it with the collector crowd. Nobody wants to be seen sporting an obvious "poser plate".

Re: Classic black CALIF PLATES

I tried to order a set of replacement plates for my 61 Chevy as the original plates were pretty chewed up after 50 years, not to mention having 50 layers of stickers on the renewal tag.

Interestingly, they will not let you replace your existing plates with another set with the exact same lettering/numbering. They will have to be personalized. Additionally, the lettering appears to be slightly different and the paint (it is reflective unlike the originals) is slightly different.

Bottom line, these are personalized plates. So, if you want something to replace the originals exactly, you will need to restore your current plates. However, $50 is a pretty good deal for new plates considering its California. I've seen them around, and you can tell immediately the new ones from the originals.

However, they still look great to me!

Tom

That is what I heard too. The reissued plates will have reflective paint on the numbers as required by law.

Re: Classic black CALIF PLATES

The sample plates that I saw at the DMV about 24 months ago did absolute nothing for me, but remember I'm 50ish (old guy)and have had black plates my whole driving life so I know the black ones real well, if I purchase a truck that does not have black plates I will usually purchase DMV cleared black commercial ones at the auto swapmeets (or sometimes altering the existing ones on the truck, making them black ) and paying the $45 for the YOM, I'm stupid that way.

Re: Classic black CALIF PLATES

Maryland is now issuing "Vintage Plates". They are nothing more than another option for any vehicle, like our "Bay Plates" and "Farm Plates". Those two actually put half the fee towards the benefit of bay and farm preservation. These vintage plates are just orange/yellow with black characters that says "vintage" at the bottom and can go on any year vehicle. I've only seen them on newer vehicles. I don't think they donate anything to the cause of preserving vintage vehicles. Not sure what their purpose is. I guess if you know the changes through the years they will look similar to one year in the past. Ok, just checked. They are a stamped embossed painted tin sort of replica of the flat steel porcelain 1910 plate you can put on your 2015 or anything you want

Interesting. Had not heard of this yet. Cannot find anything on the MVA web page.

Re: Classic black CALIF PLATES

I Googled maryland vintage plates and got this:

https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=...98197061,d.dmo

The official name is Maryland 1910 Vintage Registration.

Re: Classic black CALIF PLATES

Pretty cool! Now if only CA would exempt older vehicles from emission testing.

A while back I read an article (maybe in the SEMA newsletter) stating that vehicles over 25 years old account for less than 0.1% of total emissions. (And it might have been 0.01%.) That's because there aren't that many on the road, and they're typical driven only a couple thousand miles or less per year. Bottom line is with or without emission controls, old cars have virtually zero affect on air quality. But that kind of logic doesn't matter to Prius driving tree-huggers.

Currently, smog inspections are required for all vehicles except diesel powered vehicles 1997 year model and older or with a Gross Vehicle Weight (GVWR) of more than 14,000 lbs, electric, natural gas powered vehicles over 14,000 lbs, motorcycles, trailers, or gasoline powered vehicles 1975 and older.
