I believe there are some transfer cases that use trans fluid, but the ones common in our years, the Rockwell T-221, NP205 and Dana 20 all use gear oil.

That is what I use too. I did try the Lucas gear oil when I swapped out my trans for a 4 speed and put new seals in the transfer case.

I have also heard of people draining the gear oil out of their transfer cases and replacing it with transmission fluid. Don't know the pros and/or cons of it cuz they are still running with no problems but maybe somebody else does.

Mostly use tranny fluid in the Northland. The gear oil is just too stiff at -30. Any place with above freezing temps could easily use gear oil.

i am using 90w gear oil, and my truck is starting to go through it like crazy. i hope my transmission to transfer case adapter hasn't cracked. everytime i drive my truck, the oil will warm up and gush out, and leave a puddle the size of a basketball. is there anything thicker i can use?

my np208 in my ford calls for tranny fluid, and so does the np245 tranny, it used to have 80w 90 in it but I couldnt shift the damn thing for the life of me when it was cold outside, gave my right arm a real good workout though
