'61 transmission question

So my new to me '61 stepside has a 235 and a four speed behind it. Supposedly the 235 runs, but I want a sbc in there. My question is what the gearing is like in the four speed, since I never go to drive it.

Is first a "granny" gear or is it a usable 1st gear ?

Will a small block like a 350 bolt up to it ?

Thanks in advance !

I currently have 350 and a 4 speed. Never use 1st gear. But thats cause i dont hual anything but hay. Gears suck going 55-65 and it feels like the truck is to high in rpm. I would like to ebentually do the camaro/ s10 t5 tranny

Re: '61 transmission question

yes it's a granny 1st gear. all the stock transmissions are the same in in hi gear 1to1 ratio except the 3sp overdrive. to change to a sbc you will need the correct bell-housing for the hay clutch. the 4sp will bolt up.

Re: '61 transmission question

Thanks, guys, that's kind of what I figured. Not that a granny gear is useless: used one on the farm all the time !

Guess I will go with my original plan of a 350 and an automatic.

Anyone need a "supposedly" running complete 235 and a 4 speed ? Free shipping, if you pick it up !
