A bit of follow up...
After the u-joint fix we continued our trek over to I-5 and down to Bako (Bakersfield) where I had all the fluids checked and topped off for the Mohave desert drive. Just as the garage was finishing the work I hear over the radio that high winds had blown over about 20 18 wheelers. We decided to head out anyway for a windy, slow traffic, trip to needles where we grabbed a hotel. Early the next morn I had a chance to test out the 4 wheel drive. Worked like a champ.

Got a late start the next day and got nailed by a blizzard on I-40 about 150 miles west of Albuquerque, 15 miles an hour with low visibility (snowing hard) but the 64 handled it with ease. Spent the night at the Route 66 casino and shot craps for a few hours, had a great time. That was all the fun for the next 700 mile run home, pulled into the house on Christmas Day evening. Quite the expirence being on the road Christmas Day, I must say, we enjoyed it.

On a side note, just bought this in Albuquerque
