gas filler pipe/hose ?
I know the bed on my 1983 is not the original and I believe the gas tank/filler pipe/hose might also be from something else. Take a look at the following pics, what am I missing to mount the filler neck to the bed side? Do I have two or even three different years' parts? Thanks,

Re: gas filler pipe/hose ?
You need the metal mounting brackets that bolt to the underside of the bed. They are specific for 79-83. 84 and up use a plastic mounting cup that screws to the bed side.

You hours have a plastic piece that bolts to the three empty holes on the bedside outer skin and 3 smaller ones under the cap. You can see the other 3 holes with the cap off

Re: gas filler pipe/hose ?
I did buy a plastic part from LMC called a "housing" (along with hardware) but it hits the door hinge. There are only 2 holes on the filler neck (180 degrees apart)

Re: gas filler pipe/hose ?
Would you happen to have a picture of the metal bracket?

Re: gas filler pipe/hose ?
Let me see if I can get some pictures. I am 100% sure that your filler neck is 79-83 specific. You can tell by looking at the mounting fins on the sides.

Re: gas filler pipe/hose ?
Sorry about the delay. I forgot that my 83 is a dump conversion, so my truck has modifications to the fuel filler neck.
As I recall, 79-83 have the same fuel filler configuration (2 mounting ears.) 84-86 (maybe 87?) have three screws instead of two ears which secure the filler neck to the plastic housing. The long metal pieces just attach to the underside of the box - I think they were a response to the saddle tank explosion during accidents issue. I don't have my plastic housings installed because it is technically possible for me to fill the tanks by reaching through that opening with my hand. I find it a lot easier to just raise the bed and fill both tanks by passing the fuel pump hose across the exposed chassis. I think I have the original plastic housings out in the shed - if you want me to try to dig them out and take pics of them let me know. Also, some later model trucks had a braided grounding strap riveted to the mounting flange of the filler neck with the other end of the strap attached to the inside of the bed. I think this was designed to dissipate static electricity generated by plastic drop in liners and avoid an explosion from gas vapors when filling the gas tank. I don't think 83 trucks had that ground strap because I see no provision for it on the mounting ears. I think it was just on the 84 and up models which had the round flange with three mounting screws. Last edited by tucsonjwt; 01-06-2016 at 08:28 PM. |

Re: gas filler pipe/hose ?
I have ran into this with a couple trucks that I have worked on. I suggest go to junk yard and get the correct 84-87 parts to fit your bed. All you need is the plastic piece and fuel filler neck.

Re: gas filler pipe/hose ?
Looks like Natedogg might be right. You have an 83 filler neck but the mounting holes in your bed appear to be 84 and up.

Re: gas filler pipe/hose ?
Just a thought - if you don't find what you need at your local junkyards, Ebay often has filler necks and plastic housings for not much money. You may have to clean them up and add some missing hardware.

Re: gas filler pipe/hose ?
I'm wondering if the 79-83 brackets could be attached to 84-87 beds. The 84-87 filler necks are a different length than the 79-83 and you would also need to get the year specific fuel hose to go with the neck. The braided ground strap started in 84 as a way to ground the filler necks that were mounted to the plastic mounts.

Re: gas filler pipe/hose ?
Around here, you can buy the filler neck, plastic housing, and filler hose as one unit for about $15 at the pic and pull (unless you get an uncooperative checkout clerk.) Make sure to get that braided ground strap - even if you rob one from a later model truck. That might be your best option. You do have a longbed -correct?
