$2k for 6L LQ9 and 4L80 w/ harness, no ECU?

Wondering if $2k sounds like a good deal for the 6L and trans from a 2004 escalade? Guy selling bought it from salvage and hasn't heard it run, said it's got a couple of manifold bolts broken off in the heads.

If so, are there any specifics I should look at when checking the thing out? I didn't have a lot of time to research since the deal just popped up!

Re: $2k for 6L LQ9 and 4L80 w/ harness, no ECU?

Exhaust manifold bolts being broken off is an extremely common problem.

The price sounds pretty fair for the higher output 6.0 with a 4l80e. I have to say though I didn't realize they put the 4l80e in the escalade.

You're absolutely right, I double checked and it's a 2wd 4l80e out of an express van. Would that combo be difficult to find an ECU for, or would I have to use an aftermarket ECU?

Well that would be a LQ4 in a van. ECM is easy to find. Deal sounds sketchy to me already. ..

Re: $2k for 6L LQ9 and 4L80 w/ harness, no ECU?

2K for an LQ9 with a 4L80E is pretty reasonable. I paid $1500 for just the LQ9 (though it did have all accessories, ECM, harness, etc). You can use a factory ECM, it will just need a segment swap done to run the 4L80E (and you will need to repin some of the harness if you are doing it yourself. Otherwise, let your harness builder know you are running a 4L80E).

I am doing the exact same setup in my 88' R20 Crewcab with a factory ECM with the segment swap. Should be firing it up for the first time here in a week or so.

Buy it and also a factory standalone harnes from one of the vendors and used PCM for $30. Send the PCM put for a mail order tune and you are all set. That's a pretty good price if you compare to the engine prices on car-part.com site.

Re: $2k for 6L LQ9 and 4L80 w/ harness, no ECU?

Ok to clarify, the LQ9 is from an escalade, trans is from the van.
Sounds like using the original harness with mods is an option with the 4L80e, and $30 for ecu (I'll assume $60 which is not as bad as I thought. I think I'll see if this guy will deliver and if so pull the trigger.

TBH I've been looking for an entire vehicle so I could snag all the bits and pieces including seats, but I've had an eye out for about 6 months with no luck...

If possible, snag the caddy harness, pedal, connecting pedal to jumper wires, TACC module. You can rework it and add relays, fuses, obd2 port and check engine light light for under $100 in parts. I can send you a spreadshhet showing what wiees need retained for standalone configuration.

He doesn't have it, he bought the engine and trans from a salvage yard.

Re: $2k for 6L LQ9 and 4L80 w/ harness, no ECU?

Well I did get it, it's missing the starter and has a couple of cracked connectors on the harness. Also the 3-piece cover is cracked which is a bummer because the thing costs $200 on ebay... The engine looks clean though and seems to be otherwise complete. I'm going to run it stock for now, and just plan on cleaning it up and inspecting it, then putting it back together. The junkyard of course used cutters to get a bunch of things loose instead of taking the time to unbolt them...

The trans looks to be in great shape, and included the torque converter which is nice.

Thanks for the responses everyone

Not a great deal especially with the stuff missing, but I like the fact that it has the higher compression LQ9.

Aww dude, way to chime in after I purchased it! In any case, I feel better just having gotten started on the LS swap. I do think I should have held out to buy a complete wrecked vehicle but didn't find anything in the 6 months of craigslist notifications that I had set up -- and believe me, I'm seeing pretty much everything in my area!

Re: $2k for 6L LQ9 and 4L80 w/ harness, no ECU?

Sorry Jax. Good news is you have a 6.0 therefore the world is your oyster. Don't be afraid to toss a mild cam in it, if you really want to be impressed with the motor. I have a stock LQ4 in my C10 backed by a TH350 (now 4l80e with shift kit) and 2.73's and it was quite underwhelming...lol. This spring I am bolting on my Ebay T70 turbos and hoping to improve the wow factor. Love having fuel injection and reliable motor though. stick a Bluetooth module in the OBDII port, download the Torq app for your phone and most of your gauges can be displayed in the palm of your hand. From engine vacuum, to coolant temp.

If you're scared of doing turbo stuff yourself, take a look at the Sloppy Mechanics stuff. He often does a seriously ****ty job, but it tends to work pretty damn well and shows that anyone can do it.

Yeah, it's pretty slick. This was when I was running Megasquirt MS3x, and could monitor AND tune realtime, via bluetooth.

Yep, my main interest is reliability but now that I've got the motor well... might as well do something with it I guess

Was bleeding the system of air...this is the condition that it was in at the time of the video, so I wasn't in danger of driving away without it.

Factory 2.73's my friend. I may change them later, but they will help to load the turbos when the time comes. Highest I would go is 3.08.
