Standalone Emergency flashers

Im hoping to have this wired in the next week or two. I just need a flasher and some time to implement.

This is how I wired mine except I keep the stock turn signal switch. On my 66 I used the turn signal wires not the park/ running lights. For the front lights I used the light blue and dark blue wires, the rear lights are the Yellow and dark green wire.

Wait, why two different switches?

The single pole dual throw switch was to replace the stock turn signal switch. If yours works I would use that instead of using the second switch. Sorry if I added to the confusion.

OUR trucks originally have common turn/brake lights there is NO brake light switch in his diagram and with the front and rear turn lamps hooked together you would have FRONT brake lights every time you stopped if there was

So if the bulbs have two filaments, one for running lights, and the other for turn/brake

If i'm stopped on the side of the road, and have my foot off the brake, then the brake/turn side of the bulb will be used for flashing. right?

that would mean that if I have the running lights on, the lights will still flash.

Did I get this right?

Yep that is right! Our trucks use 1157 dual filament bulbs, that will allow you to do both.

Got the switch and flasher in. It works!

BUT,

Now my front markers illuminate when i hit the brakes.

Its not a huge deal, but it is something i know can be fixed. The problem is that my harness has been hacked and repaired and spliced 6 ways from sunday, so using a factory diagram isnt gonna help me much.

Using the diagram that haaland provided, i piggybacked into the wires that go to both lights, one for each side. I think what happened here though is that I'm too far downstream and am bridging both front and rear lights with the new wiring, so I'm illuminating the front marker lights when i brake.

Any thoughts on how to fix this part? Or should I just live with it?

Here is a picture of the hazard switch. Red line is y'ed to the middle contacts, and white and blue are left and right signals...

This is what jtrichard has been saying would happen with these two wiring diagrams. The brake lights feed thru the turn signal switch. So when you tie the front and rear turn signal wires together, your front turn signals will light up when you hit the brakes.

Here is exactly how mine is wired with the OEM turn signal switch. Sorry it's drawn on a piece of paper when I get time I'll make a version in paint. The hazard circuit is in red. Hope this helps clarify everything.

I've found three flarestat hazard kits, all for under $50. I just got my third one last week, from the classifieds here, for $40 shipped.
And I've missed a few over the last couple years as well.
(One for my Suburban, one for the K10 I just picked up,and one for a spare or parts if needed).

Just saying--they're not that hard to find, if you're patient and shop.

Cap, JT, sorry i didn't catch that part of what you had been saying.

I'm sure that there's simple fix for this. If not, I can live with it. Even with the front markers lighting up, the turn signals still work with my stepping on the brake pedal.

Brad, Yeah, finding a flarestat kit would have been the "right" way of doing this, but time was of the essence. I wanted to have a dash mounted toggle switch, rather than a pull knob. Plus, i'm only into this setup for about 8 bucks. 42 dollars can go into other parts for my truck.

Haaland, I connected the harness the same way, but I think that since my harness is just a hodgepodge of gremlin nests and splicing, that my brake light switch is wired in somewhere it shouldn't be. I'll take some pictures during lunch and show where my light wires are connected.

With your last drawing Yes you would NOT have "front" brake lights BUT you show Both the L and R front connected together via you red hazard wiring and the same on the rear ....SO every time you turn the left turn signal on the right will also come on and vice-versa for right turn front and rear ...... PLEASE anyone correct me if i am wrong
NOW if you have some diodes in line??????? that will be a different story

JT, you're right. It looks like that diagram shows a front rear split rather than a side to side split.

I did that at first, and noted that all 4 lights would flash during a turn signal.

I wired one side blue and green, and the other light blue and yellow. that way, I could still signal, but would mean that the front lights are lighting up too.
