Need some help with my '70...
How's it goin' everyone? Recently my '70 has been acting up and want to see if anybody has some input on what you think it could be?
This started up just recently. I would only take my truck out on the weekend to cruise around a bit. I ended up buying it a new battery as the other died on me. I can go into garage and crank up the truck no problem. Starts like a champ, cold start. If I drive a few miles down the road to gas up or to run an errand I turn off truck and when I go to start it up again, it gives me trouble. Almost like the battery is running out of juice or something? Very slow to start. The battery is new though, which has me wondering what it is? Seems like it only does this when the truck is warmed up after driving a few miles. Any ideas on what it could be? Any info/advice is greatly appreciated!

Mine does this also. Heat soaks and cranks a few times then finally fires up?
Curious what you figure out |

Definitely sounds like your starter needs a heat shield.

if this problem just started, it is more than likely your timing is off, check your timing before going any further....(.when timing is off,you will get a good cold start but when warm acts like starter is going bad or weak battery)

Also check all the battery cable connections. If you just installed a new battery could be that connection isn't quite tight. But I would check both ends of both cables. I too have had this problem and have eliminated all other possibilities so now I have a heat shield to get installed.

Ed F is on the right track with the above advice. Most likely it is a poor ground. Just reroute to a suitable ground or clean up the connection to the block or manifold as well as the battery cable end. Good luck

Re: Need some help with my '70...
I put a 48 inch ground cable from the battery to the inside mounting bolt on the starter. Someone else on here had posted about doing this to fix the hot start problem associated with these trucks. So far it works like a charm.
