5.3 to t5 and electronics questions?
So I have finally decided on a 4.8/5.3/6.0 whatever I find complete and cheap. I just put a t5 in my 66 and got my driveshaft cut so, I do not really want to have to get a new trans and driveshaft. I know the t5 is weak on a heavy truck and will probably explode but it will last me a few months. Till I can locate a t56.
First, I know I'll need a 621 bellhousing. Do the make a z bar for this? Is there anyway to use a SBC bellhousing for the 153t flywheel? Second, fly wheel options? McLeod's makes a fly with proper spacing and you can run an 11" clutch. But it's $400. Part # 460535. Is there any other options for a flywheel that will bolt to the ls and be able to run a 10.5 clutch with mechanical throwout? I'd like to run the 153t flywheel so I don't need a new starter. Third, I plan on running a megasquirt 1 for fuel and a msd 6010 for ignition. Is there anything else I will need to run the engine? I plan on running a cable throttle body so I don't have to use the drive by wire. I have searched and found a lot of good information but still a little unsure about everything I'll need to do the swap easily. |

Re: 5.3 to t5 and electronics questions?
A world class T5 out of a early 90s V8 Camaro is probably your best bet, but it won't take a lot of abuse from an LS motor. You can move the shifter forward with a S10 tailshaft and shift assembly, but they are hard to find with a mechanical speedometer drive and getting the speedometer gear on the tailshaft is a problem
An original 621 bellhousing will clear the flywheel ring gear, but not all the bolt holes will line up with the LS block. There's reproductions on ebay but I don't know if they have the extra hole drilled or not. Silver Sport Transmission has a nice reproduction 621 bell housing. I don't know anything about z bars, but I'm using a external slave on the bell housing for hydraulic clutch. Lots of other options if you want to run a hydraulic throwout bearing, but I don't trust them. Sachs makes a flywheel for the LS that you can buy for about $100 - it fits the trucks with the NV3500 transmission. The part number is NFW1050 A big block clutch will fit with a little modification to the bolt pattern. You can get more details on this combination at- http://ls1tech.com/forums/conversion...-flywheel.html |

Re: 5.3 to t5 and electronics questions?
E015475 Thank you. I just found the Sachs NFW-1050 and that is exactly what I need. I'd like to run the mechanical clutch linkage if possible. But my have to look into the hydraulic setup. I have a non-wc t5 out of an 86 camaro so not the best but it's what I had when I did the swap.
