T5 Camaro Tailshaft Swap
I have an '84 Camaro (NWC) T5 and I want to change the sift location to the S10 location. The S10 I have is a '89 (WC) and I wanted to make sure I didn't have to have a S10 (NWC) tailshaft. Thanks Ed...

Re: T5 Camaro Tailshaft Swap
I believe your combo will work Ed. NWC and WC main cases are the same externally, only changes between the transmissions were internal to the main case. Tailshaft housings are interchangeable. I don't recall off the top of my head which year electronic speedo output came into play, I think it was in the early 90's, but that is always a consideration when choosing a tailshaft housing - older gear driven speedo output is no headache, electronic needs to be converted somehow.

Re: T5 Camaro Tailshaft Swap
Hey jocko have you heard anything about the oil flinger in the 1989 (WC) S10 tailshaft not wanting to fit into the 1984 (NWC) Camaro? Looking at the H.A.M.B. jalopy journal site, page 3, by "bobscogin" mentioned this situation and said it would need to be a (NWC) S10 tailshaft. Have you done this swap or know of anyone who has before I pull the S10 out of the truck and take chance? Thanks again Ed...

Here is some handy info: Camaro and Firebird NWC T5 = 1983-1987 (Muncie pattern case) Camaro and Firebird WC T5 = 1988-1992 (Muncie pattern case) Camaro and Firebird 1993 and up are also WC but have a Ford case. S10, Sonoma & S15 trucks NWC T5 = 1983-1992 (Muncie Pattern case) S10, Sonoma & S15 trucks WC T5 = 1993 (Muncie pattern case) S10, Sonoma & S15 trucks 1994 and up are also WC but have a Ford case. Your 1984 NWC Camaro will mate up with the 1989 NWC S10 tail just fine. As food for thought. if you rebuild the Camaro T5 using the S10 main shaft instead of the Camaro main shaft, then you can keep the VSS and use an electronic gauge. It really all depends on what you want to end up with. If you have a V6 Camaro then swap out the input shaft for a Jeep input shaft and eliminate the need for a spacer plate. LINK

Re: T5 Camaro Tailshaft Swap
You will most likely need to change the speedometer drive gear location on the tailshaft. The gears usually have a clip holding them in place with a hole in the tailshaft as well. You can not drill a new hole and the shaft diameter is smaller where the gear needs to be positioned. Best bet is to shim the gear and use some J-B Weld to hold it all in place.
