so if it's going to bind, it will probably do it first sharp turn? not a random thing after I completely forget about it?

Yep. Binding is how you know you've gone too far. I'd drive and see how it does.
I had a wandering problem I couldn't solve. Steering parts all new, I replaced the steering box and no change. It responded slowly and a whole lot of compensation. I did the have a friend work the wheel thing while I watched and the whole axle/spring assembly was racking. It was caused by the urethane bushings in the lift springs being cracked up. They weren't all that old, don't know why they split, but don't count on urethane bushings outlasting the 40 year old rubber you replaced. I had the same kind of wandering issue on the '72 I now have. All parts had been replaced and it still wandered. This time it was the pitman arm worn at the steering box. That thing had a good bit of wiggle.
