Alterantor question

On my 2002 Suburban the alternator went out today and it's the 130bosch unit I got a replacement from the auto parts store installed it and it charges butt occasionally it randomly drops charge. After 2 hours of searching nobody had another one and I had to order another one to come in in the morning just swap it out. My question is has anybody ever used the Delco unit as a direct replacement for the bosch unit. The plugs are the same just in a different spot. Will the computer control a delco unit if it had a bosch unit? Everyone has delcos unit but not the bosch ones.

So wi they inter change?

Re: Alterantor question

i am not able to help you with this question, but this brings up another question.

if the alternator is listed as a direct replacement shouldnt it work out of the box?

and...

if your using a stand alone harness such as a 3 or 4 wire, shouldnt any ole alternator that fits work?

According to my diagrams, They both use the same Regulator Connector & are wired the same.

Re: Alterantor question

Do not buy remanufactured anything like starters or alternators, just because they have a lifetime warranty. I work for O'Reilly's and 7 out of ten come back in less than three months or less because their junk. Unless of course you like trying to see how fast you can swap them out lol.

Re: Alterantor question

Have you asked at the O'Reilly's? They should be able to get it from Keystone which is our other parts supplier or from out of the district. Have you tried Rock-Auto yet either?

Re: Alterantor question

Im to the poi t now that i dont know if it is the alternator ive got the napa one on there and it will charge at 14.2 volts then with nothing on drop to 13.6 then jump back to 14.2 turn the ac on it will drop to 12.6 or lower which mean no charge one point stayed that way for 45 seconds before jumping back to 14.2, if i increase the rpms by 200 rpms it will not drop which makes me thing alternator.my frist one did this, second and third smelled really bad. Im at my wits end with this .

I do have a snap on Solus Ultra scaner wonding if theres a way to montior pcm request for charge and back prope the plug and see if it has a charge singal at the alt when it drops voltage

Re: Alterantor question

If the alternators are getting hot, Suspect.....

1. Battery has a dead cell, Charge the battery with a charger, Remove the charger & monitor the voltage with a meter, A fully charged battery will have at least 12.6 volts, (a surface charge of 12.6-13 volts will linger for a while on a good battery) If it drops below 12 volts.....The battery is bad & is overworking the hell out the alternator.

2. Bad Connections, Disassemble both battery cable terminals & clean them, Remove the Nut, Then the Rubber end will slide off the Cable, Clean the Nuts & Cable ends & reassemble. A Radiator Hose Pick is the perfect tool for this.

Re: Alterantor question

Well, The Temp Sensor, & Regulator control wires are next to each other in some parts of the harness, Have you checked for rodent damage, Bare spots in the harness with no loom rubbing on metal components, Or previous wiring repair?

Not very often a "P01" PCM goes bad, Probably the last thing I would suspect. This is my general rule on most vehicles.....Besides Chrysler products....They have know PCM (Solder Joint) issues.

Re: Alterantor question

i did check the harness and did not see anything that stood out, i had anotehr shop down the street from mine look at it and they seem to think its the alternator because if you incread the idle speed by 200 rpms the problem goes away but at teh 550 idle it will randomly drop chrage. i ordered an ac delo reman from a local vendor for $195.00 it should be here thursday or friday and i'll have to see if thats the cure or not. i am so done with these mass reman alts

Re: Alterantor question

Welp other shop called me today turns out the ac delco was bad also push on the back of the case where voltage reg was and it would start charging, going tk install the normal delco style alternator since according to the ac delco Bulletin that the bosch Style and Delco Style are interchangeable and the delco style is easlier to get my hands on so this will make alternator #6

Re: Alterantor question

I would want to know why the fusable link was getting hot in the first place, removing it and replacing it with a cable is like taking a blown fuse out and putting a paper clip in its place, or putting a penny in an old house fuse box that takes the old screw in glass fuses, its a fire waiting to happen. .......
